Stage 1: Buy domain and setup site.

I thought I'd use my WA blog to show all the stages I'm going through step by step - from creation to the first sale. My plan is to also to refer back to this in the future when I'm advertising WA to others.

The idea...

Today I decided to go with the "make money online" niche. Not just because WA recommended it but because I've been doing this for a few years (or trying to!) And if nothing else I can point people in the right direction for quality documentation, logo designers, themes and plugins. Most of which offer affiliate schemes.

The domain...

So having decided upon my niche I headed over to GoDaddy to search for my domain name, I think they are really good for domains, you get free email accounts and the support is great. Plus the domains are really cheap too.

I decided to buy TheAffiliateGuy.co.uk, mainly has it has the word "Affiliate" in the title so people have an idea of what the site is about, secondly it will be a word that is used alot on my site and finally I am targeting a UK audience so I went for the .co.uk.

Nameserver setup...

Now I have my domain I need to point the nameservers to WA - basically nameservers direct an internet connection to where it needs to go, so when someone visits TheAffiliateGuy.co.uk they are diverted to the WA hosting server where my site lives. This is easy to do in GoDaddy but there are many tutorials how to do this so I'll not waste your time.

Building the site...

As simple as clicking the site builder button, filling in the domain name, Site title and selecting a theme my site is now built and live. I selected a random theme, this isn't important to me at the minute - I plan to install theme "X" shortly. Which is a premium theme and costs $64 but looks brilliant when setup correctly.

Hide from the search engines...

A final step what I like to do is discourage search engines from indexing my site because it is just a shell at the minute with no meaningful content. To do this, in your sites admin panel, click Settings -> Reading and tick the "Discourage search engines from indexing" checkbox then click "Save". I will remove this tick when my site is ready to be released to the world! :)

Next stage...

The next step is to create my menu structure. Which I will do offline and update in a few days. I'll try and get a few pics up too showing my thought process.

Cheers

Chris
