Why is Domain Name Important in Ranking or Indexing?

If I understand anything about SEO, all the pages of all the domains are indexed on Google. I keep reading about how you need your domain name to include your keywords to be effective. My confusion starts when I see domains like "amazon". This site sells everything from soup to nuts. How is amazon a keyword for the products that they sell. Amazon may not be the best example because of who they are, but my point is most websites that I visit do not have keywords in their domain names. When you have a variety of products to market, I don't see how you can possibly have a domain name for each one of them. Keywords on pages I understand, I just don't get the emphasis on keywords in the domain name. It does not seem to be a common practice in the internet world. Where am I not understanding this domain keyword thing?

So that is something like in skiing? If I have .com that give me some advantage from the same theme on different .whatever ?

That's my understanding.

nice

Thanks,I thought so :)

I don't understand either. And what is better .com or .info for example and why?Why is subdomain .siterubix.com not so ....hm...cool/attractive?Or is it?

I understand that .com gets indexed more readily than the other ,s. Also, .com is more familiar to more people and therefore easy for them to remember. There are many mysteries in this business that I am slowly starting to unravel.

Amazon is a brand. One can brand without an 'exact match domain' (EMD). When you ask many a successful IM member, marketing a brand is favored. But that doesn't mean an EMD won't become successful too. And I agree with kws, 'keywords have nothing to do with the domain name'.A Conundrum. ^_~

In my point of view, Domain name is the most essential factor to increase page rank in Google , yahoo etc . It is necessary to each and every website I have registered my domain name with the provider

As i understand it your domain name should reflect the name of your business or at least relate to the type of business. Keywords have nothing to do with the domain name. Using a new and unique keyword for each article or posting would require changing domains if it did- not very practical.
