Much Needed Grace to cope with loneliness in isolation

For the last couple of months, the world shut down and most of us were forced to shelter in place.

Most people say that we are all in this together, but that couldn’t be so much further from the truth.

It’s true we are all in the same storm, but we are riding it in different boats. Some are getting through it in a private cruise ship while the rest of us ride small boats.

In this blog, I would like to call out one group that may be struggling more than most. The one boat that is struggling in total isolation is the boat for those that are struggling in recovery from alcohol or drug addiction, whether new graduates from a rehab or in long term recovery.

Addiction is known as a disease of isolation. The anxiety, depression and everything in between seem to be heightened with the shelter in place and all the anxiety that covid 19 carries. Added to this is the unemployment and loss of much needed jobs.

This is difficult for anyone but there is no telling what a challenging situation this must be. Because of the social distancing, the AA and other 12 steps programs were all shut down without notice. This is the life line for those in recovery. Without this, majority are in danger of relapse unless they have strong family and friend’s network.

We all wish there is anything we can do to help in this unprecedented moments. With my experience from family and friends, I think the best we can do is stay positive and encourage those struggling with Covid19 special challenges, whether in recovery from alcohol or other form of addiction and are in actively seeking recovery or others.

This will soon pass.but Meanwhile, let’s pay attention to what’s going on with those in our circles and provide much needed grace as some around us struggle to figure out how to cope with loneliness in isolation.
