Start Today, You'll Thank Yourself Later
July 7, 2020: It's a big day. Not for any particular holiday or celebration, but personally I'm hitting a huge milestone today: 10 years with my current employer. I've worked for them in multiple roles over the years. Even before I was accepted into university, I was working delivering boxes and cutting grass here, eventually moving into facility maintenance, then their communications & admin team, and finally graduating university which thankfully got me into their accounting department in 2018. It's been a long journey for me, one that I definitely didn't plan or expect.
As I reflect over the past 10 years working here, I can't help but think how different my trajectory could have been. What if I got my first job somewhere else, or didn't get started as early. Where would I be? What would I be doing today if I didn't work for this company, and where might I be working if I didn't stick with it over the years?
I'm boundlessly thankful that I started working when I did, and where I did. My life wouldn't be the same if I hadn't. The personal growth and development has led me to this very point in time and there is nowhere I'd rather be. Every step I took pushed me further, even if it didn't feel like that at the time.
10 years is too long without a change. I'm taking action. I joined Wealthy Affiliate 8 days ago with ambitions to start my online business, and the goal is to be able to do that full-time and quit my day job. To work from home, set my own hours, and be my own boss. Not every day will be productive, not every day will be succesful. I might stumble and fall, I might have no clue what I'm doing most days, but I'm willing and capable of learning. I might even be discouraged and want to quit. But those small steps every day will get me to my goals. My system will push me onward.
Some of the best advice I've received is this: if you fall, fall forward. Learn from every mistake and every error. Do not give up. Get up. Take those small steps. Take those small actions. If you don't know, learn. Don't feel like writing a blog post or feel overwhelmed? That's fine. Write a sentence. Write a paragraph, and return to it tomorrow. But do it! Feel discouraged? Look around, there are endless success stories on Wealthy Affiliate. Push yourself to work harder and achieve it. That pool picture from my last year's vacation at the top of the post? Yeah I'd rather be there too. Kicking back with a drink in my hand and the sun on my face. But you nor I can get there if we don't put in the effort now.
I'm taking steps today because I know that small actions can compound. A week from now I'll look back on my progress and I'll be further along than if I didn't start today. It's that simple. And a year from now, I'll follow up on this post and know I'll be thankful that I started today. This day. Because of how far along I will be. Maybe even 10 years on, I'll look back and say it all started here too and reflect back on my journey.
My message to you today is this: Start today. When you look back in a year, two years, five years, ten, how far along will you be? What might you be able to achieve if you just take your first step today versus tomorrow. Time is precious and you'll thank yourself years from now that you started today instead of weeks or months later. You control the direction of your life. Take action.
May you reach your success.
