In the United States it affects up to 85% of those between 12 to 15 years of age.
95% of the entire population will be affected with acne sometime in their life.
People between ages 15 to 40 years of age, acne is the most common skin
disease causing a visit to a dermatologists, with an estimate 5 - 6 million visits
per year.
The patients quality of life (QOL) is effected greatly by acne valgaris - acne,
and is considered to be one of the most severe chronic illnesses. Not only due
to the medical conditions, but also with the psychiatric and psychological effect
caused by the present of acne.
Costs
In the United States over 1 billion dollars are estimated to be spent yearly on
medications and medical office visits. An estimated 3.5 billion dollars are spend
globally for acne treatment medications and office visits.
"Acne-related medication accounted for approximately 36% of the total acne-
related yearly healthcare costs."
The yearly per person healthcare costs for acne medications is placed at $317.00.
Acne Over View
The basic causes of acne are twofold. Genetics and hormones are the main
culprits. Both of which we have no control over. A typical acne patient is one
who has an oily skin, which is genetically related. With the onset puberty in
adolescents, the hormones know as androgens causes the sebaceous gland to
enlarged and produce an excess of oily secretions. The skins pores become
blocked with dead skin cells and the oily secretion called sebum. Which allows
the ever present acne bacteria to feed and grow on this accumulation. The by
product of bacteria causes the skin pore area to become red in color. Thus,
a blemish is formed.
Treatment
It is at this time that Teenager Acne Treatment systems should be foremost in
an adolescents mind. If the acne condition is not treated at this stage, it can
progress further and resulting in painful, inflamed blackheads, whiteheads with
the possibility of pustules, cysts or scare formation.
Research
University and medical institutes are in the forefront on cutting edge
research striving to find better treatment means for this severe chronic
skin disease. A technique known as Photo Dynamic Therapy, which uses
visible light in the blue range to destroy the acne bacteria.
This technique is effective for mild to moderate acne and when enhanced
with Levulan ALA it becomes very effective for treating severe or cystic acne.
So....as these new techniques are brought forward from the research clinics to
the testing and onto the patient treatment situation we must be patience.
Some of these acne treatment medications will show promise, while others
will fall by the way side as ineffective.
All this takes time.......

Hello, James. I looked at your site & left a comment. It is very informative and I haven't had acne for a # of years. I'm 62, but I was born & raised in FL. The sun has given my skin cancer, I think. I can't afford to go to a dermatologist yet, but I will when I can. This is informative on how it all works. Thanks again and best wishes to you!
Thanks-you take care of yourself.
