Beginners, get started with a niche.ANY niche! Try this .1,2,3,4.
Ok, so I've been a WA Premium member for a couple of weeks and despite the excellent information I've read and comments from people I've had conversations with - I still, for the life of me - COULD NOT DECIDE on a niche! Until now.
And this is how I decided to jump in and move forward. I hope it helps you too.
The first step I took towards narrowing down what would be my first niche was to put together a list of topics I could see myself comfortably blogging on where I had some really good advice to offer. Advice that has been proven in my own life to be invaluable and which I believe is not readily available elsewhere on the internet.
1. Make a list of topics where you feel you can provide valuable insights/advice that have proven invaluable in your own life.
I must have compiled at least 12 unrelated pages of keywords lists for topics that I'm interested in, but was not sure whether they would be THE "right" keyword niche to delve into. Maybe I'm just afraid of putting all my eggs into one niche basket so to speak. On closer examination - this turned out to be "fear of having to be perfect before starting."
Why would someone put that kind of pressure on themselves when just starting out? One reason might be to avoid going down the wrong path to the point where you realize you've put a lot of effort into something that's not performing traffic-wise, financially, or whatever - the way you want it to. Let's face it - we are starting a business and businesses require the ability to provide income. So, while not be the most important aspect right now, I think the next step is an important consideration too.
2. Out of that list, choose the one or two topics most easily monetized.
With that in mind, I was able to choose the one or two topics that I've noticed have very successful websites already. This brings up the fear that we might choose a niche which with overwhelming competition both online and in rankings. It is my belief that as long as your knowledge foundation matches your targeted audience's needs, what you learn on WA will assist you in dealing with this competition. With that said, it seems unwise to believe that it would be just as easy to tackle a topic with huge competition as it is to work on something with less competition. All things being equal, I would choose the niche that offers less competition.
3. Assess the competition. More competition = more work, less competition might be a better niche to start out with.
And finally, this whole process is not only a journey for learning, but also a journey that should be FUN. While struggling to choose my first niche I can definitely say my indecision during these past two weeks have not been fun. I would choose something, then change my mind. Then not like that next choice....argh!
It's time to get started already! The fear of not choosing the perfect niche is silly at this stage. You can use your first site as your learning tool; the "first pancake". It might turn out great or it might have to be trashed and re-started. But think about how much you would have learned in the meantime while actually working on a topic. Even if it doesn't work out the way you expect it to - think of how much more quickly you can get another niche site together in the future, when you're more certain of your niche(s).
The point is you're off and running and learning and moving forward. So the fourth point is:
4. Don't be afraid that it has to be perfect the first time out. Start out with one and do your learning and mistakes with this one. It just might surprise you where it goes.
So, now I've chosen my "first pancake" and I'm ready to actually START something - yes! It feels good.
