Establish A Routine

Routine Or No Routine?

One of the things I love about being my own boss, is that I can do what I want, when I want to do it. That being said, having some sort of routine helps to keep me on task, and consistently putting out good content.

Tasks

There are certain tasks that I need to do every week with my business. I need to research and do all of the screen shots for my tutorial posts. I need to make sure that the post is ready to go once per week, and that I create images for each type of social media. There are things that I want to make sure I do on the WA site every week.

My Weekly Schedule

I created a MS Word document with a weekly schedule of tasks to be completed each day. I can switch things around as my personal life dictates, but I need to get certain things done, or my business doesen't go anywhere.

Notice My First Task On Wednesday

I schedule in time to give feedback on WA websites. If I do six every week, that gives me 3 credits that I can use to get comments on my own site. This is really essential! I need to make time to give to others, so I can receive the payback on my own site. Start scheduling time to offer comments or feedback. It's a win for everyone involved!

Sometimes I Get On A Roll

Sometimes, I am in the creative zone. I love it when I'm there! That means that I can just keep creating and writing without tiring, and the words are just pouring out of my fingertips. This week, I had a day like that, and got screen shots ready for three posts! That made this week fly by, because I had a lot of work ready to go in the pipeline.

When it happens, I roll with it, and ignore other things I'm supposed to be doing that day. Bursts of energy and creativity are not to be ignored! I'll catch up on other stuff later in the week.

Only One To Two Posts Per Week?

That's all I can handle. I would rather have quality over quantitiy any day of the week. The quality posts will keep building up, just at a slower rate that the training advises.

Do You Use A Schedule?

If you do something different from mine, let me know in the comments.

I notice that one very important task is missing from your weekly routine, Laurie. Backups.

I backup my website manually 3 times a week on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays using WP Clone. At the same time, I download the automatic backups from Updraft Plus and save them all on my computer.

On the 1st day of every month I backup my backups to an external hard drive.

Hi Marion,

Thanks for reading. I do backups as a matter of course, every time I write a blog post. It's just part of my blog post routine. As soon as I get any kind of update, I back up before installing the update. As soon as a write a post, I backup as soon as the post is posted.

I use WP Clone as well. Is Updraft Plus a different plugin?

I just read a bit about Updraft Plus. Why do you use that in addition to WP Clone, and the backups done by Wealthy Affiliate?

I don't use WA for hosting, and even if I did I would still do my own backups. Updraft Plus can be set to run automatically so I get backups every day which I download 3 times a week. And WP Clone's developers state that it can fail in around 10% of cases. My website is too important to me to leave it to chance.

Good to know!

It's only as good as you follow it

Isn't that the truth! :)

I love having a schedule and being able to ticks things off as I complete them. It's amazing how much you can achieve by setting one up.

There are times when my schedule also goes out the window as I'm in the flow of something that I can't let go - I just run with it.

Currently, I use Evernote as I can access it easily from my phone, laptop, work PC etc the nature of the software also enables me to quickly jot things down especially when I'm on the go which I can then incorporate into my schedule.

I keep a monthly schedule as I find it more productive for the goals I aim to achieve.

Thanks for sharing what you do.

Excellent. Isn't it fun when you get in the flow and magic just happens? It's not very often, but boy when it does, I don't mind tossing out my schedule! lol
