How To Choose Your 1st Domain Name - Keyword-Rich Domains vs. Branded Domains - Which is Better?

Are you confused about what type or what the name of your new domain should be?

I understand your confusion completely!

You may be getting suggestions by many others on "What type of domain name you should choose for your first domain name and your first website" and it can be very confusing and frustrating!

I just got an email from someone asking me for help on this issue so I figured I'd write my answer in a blog format so it could be a help to many others as well.

So in this article, we will discuss how to choose your 1st domain name when trying to decide whether you should choose a "Keyword Rich" domain name or more of a "Branded" type of domain name when first starting out online.

I don't know exactly what, who, or where you may have heard that keyword research is only good for just "content"...because that is definitely not the case....it helps when determining a domain name as well. (if you don't believe me, then just ask Kyle or Carson).

Take Kyle's websites for example...his website names (other than Wealthy Affiliate and Jaaxy) that he uses for examples on all the Getting Started training courses are "keyword phrases"...

These are Kyle's "Keyword Rich" domain names:

1. http://waystoavoidscamsonline.com

2. http://howtolosebellyfattoday.com

And these are Kyle's "BRANDED" domains:

1. http://WealthyAffiliate.com

2. http://Jaaxy.com

In other words, there are two types of Domain names...

1. Keyword Rich Domains

2. Branded Domains

If you are brand new to the online world and you're working on building your first website, you want people to find your site easier and have more chances of actually clicking on your link, and without having to spend a bunch of money to acquire "Public Awareness/Branding," right?

In that case, then you should use a Keyword Rich Domain.

Make sense?

With Branded Domains, it takes much expensive advertising to get the public aware of what your brand is about before they begin to recognize it.

For example...

If I had never, ever heard of WalMart before, and let's say I was searching for:

"Every Day Low Prices on Socks" ...

....and on the first two lines of the first page in the search results, I see these two domains/websites listed....

1. Walmart.com

2. EveryDayLowPricesOnSocks.com

...which one do you think I'd be more likely to click on??? (Keep in mind that I said that I had never heard of Walmart before in this example).

Better yet, if YOU had never heard of Walmart before and searched for this term and found the above two examples, which one are YOU most likely to click on in this example???

I bet your answer is the same as mine (I would click on the "relative" domain name because it is highly related to my search query)....and I can say that with confidence because of one sole reason.... "RELATIVITY."

Do you get the point?

Does this help you at all?

Lastly, It's YOUR site and YOUR domain name, so YOU do what YOU want...no matter what anybody else says...just educate yourself on the matter first and decide whether you want to start off with a Branded or Keyword Rich domain first before beginning your quest.

If you really, really like your current domain title, then stick with it....I only pointed this out to you because it can make a big difference when starting out in regards to organic traffic or organic clicks.

I started out with a "Branded domain"... http://FiredOrDenied.com and NOW that I know what I know, I wish I would have been more "Keyword Rich" or keyword specific so as to gain more organic traction early on.

Now my other site is definitely a "Keyword Rich" domain but I haven't done much with it yet cause my focus is on the other due to the fact that I wanted to focus on promoting Wealthy Affiliate, and that domain name is... http://NaturalCleanseAndDetox.com

Can you see the major difference between my two domains?

Which one of my domains is "Keyword Rich" and which one is more of a "Branded" domain name? Leave your answer in the comment box below to let me know that you now understand the difference between the two types of domain names.

Let me know if I can be of any further help to you all by leaving your questions, suggestions, frustrations, etc. in the comment box below.

Feel free to pass this article on to anybody you know that is struggling with deciding on what their new domain name should be.

All The Best,

Jeremy Wilson

http://NaturalCleanseAndDetox.com is KeyWord Rich Domain.

Yep it seems keyword rich is definitely the best choice for a first website.

Hey mergie1,

Thanks for concurring on this topic....you're much appreciated! :-)

Wilson

I got it. Thank you Jeremy. Can I change the present domain name ? Or I need to createa another new domain has Rich Keyword. Surely agree with your content.

Hello Jimparaya,

To answer your question, if you've already purchased a domain name, then you cannot change it, you will have to purchase another one.

However, you don't have to build a completely new website, you'll just have to transfer your existing website over to your new domain name.

See the discussion threads in these two articles on how to transfer your website to a new domain name....just DO NOT DELETE your original domain name website....be sure to read the discussion threads within each of these articles for further details...... If this info was helpful to you, please click the blue & green "LIKE" buttons and reply back to let me know.

Thank you!

Noted. Thank you Jeremy.

You're most welcome my friend!

Wilson

Good Domain names are mostly likely to be taken up. Some used sound-a-like domains to get people to remember. Too long a domain name may also get people forgetting the name even if it is Keyword rich Domains.

Hello SadieChan,

I would say that the issues you are talking about here would be more along the lines of "Branding" issues....wouldn't you agree?

Wilson

Absolutely makes sense! I was stuck in this area as well when pulling out the main pieces! Greatly appreciated, thank you !

HI Jeremy. great advice my direction for the moment is keyword rich.

Paul.

Hello Paul,

Thank you for the compliment and glad this article served you well....I think you're making a good choice on going with a "Keyword Rich" domain...especially if this is going to be your first domain name. :-)

Believe I would do both, Branded and Keyword-Rich. Depending on what one's promoting, it would be just as important. Thanks for sharing, Jeremy! Bernie

Hey Bernie,

Yes, I agree with you...but for someone's very 1st website domain name, I believe it's better for them to start with a Keyword Rich domain. And then once they've completed all their training and their website is beginning to get results, then start another "Branded" website that they can tie into their original site. Wouldn't you agree?

Wilson

Great advice, Jeremy. I have been umming and erring over the right domain name for a while now so this has really helped sway my decision.
NaturalCleanseAndDetox.com is the keyword rich domain by the way :)

Congrats hutch78uk,

You're the first one to actually answer my question! Thanks for reading the entire article and for your compliment!

I'm very happy that this info was of great use to you and helped you get over the "domain name selection" hurdle!

Good info and reminder Jeremy, thanks.
Mark

Hope you're doing well!

All The Best,
Jeremy Wilson

Doing just fine Jeremy....thank you for asking!
Mark

Good to hear my friend. :-)

Wilson

Great article, personally I like branded as that's what my future is a brand, I personally feel I couod go further with a brand and it may take longer for visitors to come but I'm in it for long haul.

Like you said it's our decision and do a bit of research before making a decision

Hello varleysheen,

Hey, are you any relation to Charlie Sheen? I had to ask...lol! ;-)

Thank you for the compliments! Yeah, it all really comes down to personal preference combined with what type of results you're looking for, so there's really no "right or wrong" decision anyone can make on this topic in my opinion...but researching is definitely key and starting with the domain name that you're going to "stick with" is much better than trying to change it all later. Wouldn't you agree?

Much success to you my friend!

All the best,
Jeremy Wilson

Varleysheen is a nickname that stuck a while a go lol, definatly agree with not changing it, I've heard it's a nightmare

Right on. :-)

Wilson
