Sadie Hawkins Day, February 29th, 2016
Sadie Hawkins Day is one of those American “Tongue in Cheek” Folk Holidays inspired by Al Capp's classic hillbilly comic strip, “Li'l Abner” (1934–1978).
Sadie Hawkins Day was first published on November 15, 1937 in the “Li'l Abner” daily strip. It was a race where one of the character’s daughters would race the eligible bachelors of the village. If she caught him, then dragged him, kicking and screaming, across the finish line before sundown—by law he had to marry her.
This was the beginning of Sadie Hawkins dances, where girls ask boys out. While celebrated every four years (Leap Year) on February 29th, the dances can be held anytime but many are held in November following the Comic Strip’s race anniversary.
So Ladies, who are you going to ask this year?

Ahhh, I forgot that this was the day. That's one way to get a guy to marry but I think I'll pass. Who wants to take him to the alter kicking and screaming. lol ~Debbi
Two sides of the same coin, LOL! Sadie was a very unfortunate lady in the looks department so her only option was the race; she wanted a chance to get a guy and then make it work. Also there was the male shy factor, some guys just need help to be happy.
Of course Debbi, for us guys it's just nice to be ask to Dance to confirm their interest and our value. LOL! :)

My very first date with my eventual soul mate for life was at our HS Sadie Hawkins Day Dance. We were crowned King and Queen Hayseed at the dance. After college we got back together and have been married for 53 years.
I remember those days as well, just had my 50th High school reunion and got to share a lot of "what Ifs" LOL :)
