Tips on writing blog posts

Just finished a new blog post this morning and figured I'd share some of my tips that helped me with my blog writing process.

Write in the Morning, Edit in the Evening

1. My first tip would be to write in the morning and edit in the evening. I'm not a morning person, but in order to be productive with my writing I made the decision to start writing early in the morning.

I go up at 5am and usually start my writing around 6am. This gives me a couple of hours of writing time before I'm of to work. I also feel I'm more motivated to write in the morning.

I learned this by reading a book called The One Thing (by Gary Keller, great book). Gary says that your willpower is slowly depleted as the day goes by. It's like a battery slowly dying. Therefore, you should start your writing when that battery is full!

I see a massive increase in productivity once I started doing all my writing in the morning. When I come back from work, I do all my editing work, no creative work in the evening.

Do Your Research the Evening Before Writing

2. I do all my research the evening before I'm doing my morning writing. I simply copy and paste sections from pages that I find relevant to what I'm going to write about (you'll see why I do this in my next point). I skim through most text and mostely look at conclusions or sections that covers the basics.

I can then read more about details later on as I'm writing my blog post. But first, I only read the basics of what I need to know in order to start writing.

Block Internert Access

3. When I'm writing I block access to the internet. I do this by using an app called Freedom (http://freedom.to). This really helps me stay focused when I write. I also put my phone on airplane mode to minimise distractions.

This is why I copy and paste all the relevant info I need during the research stage the night before my writing.

Trust me, this app will really help you focus on what matters as you write.

Focus on the Basics, Do Additional Research Later

4. This brings me to my next tip. What if you need a reference and you the need to internet to find it? Don't worry, you can always look up things later. What I do is put a TK where I need to do more research or put a reference.

Once the Freedom app allows me to access the internet again, I can look up what I need to research further.

I simply press Control + F and enter TK. This brings up all the sections in my text that I need to further research.

Schedule Your Blog Posts

5. And finally, set a publishing schedule. If you don't give yourself a deadline, you won't publish your content frequently.

My aim is 3 posts pers week. I have this as weekly goal in an app called Strides (check it out in the app store).

Those are my top tips for writing blog posts! I you find some of these tips useful. They sure have helped me stay productive! Love to hear any thoughts or if you have anything to add.

Hi Niclas and great post! I love how you do your research later and get some organization going first, omitting distractions. Your blog advice is very helpful and I will be implementing it to my daily routine. I also write in the early morning hours!--Best time to "think!" All the best to you and happy to connect!

Glad you found it helpful :) Yeah, I never thought I would do my writing in the morning. But once I started doing it I realised just how much more productive I was.

So happy it's working out for you, my friend! :)!
