Do I need to be secure on the Net? What do I need to protect myself from?

Safety is important for the survival of your business and your peace of mind.

I am not promoting anything here, just explaining the basics of what threats there are and how to protect ourselves.

I have not gone into web-site security.

Viruses

In the same way that a physical virus can infect you and undermine your health, internet viruses can disrupt and even destroy your web-sites, your emails and steal information from your computer.

Solution:

Use a form of antivirus program.

“Worms,” “Trojans” etc.

There are other forms of “attack” which can be used to steal information, modify your website for their own purposes.

Firewall program/

Email and Addresses Theft

Some attackers target email addresses and email information. They attempt to steal your address books and sometimes send spurious emails to everyone on your lists.

These can be malicious or money demands. The emails appear to have come from you.

Solution

A good Anti-Virus / Firewall program with built in email security.

Free or Paid for Programs.

There are some excellent free programmes available.

My own personal preference is a paid for one which has as much incorporated into it as possible.

Search and ye shall find plenty on the net.

Are they all the Same?

No. There are subtle differences in how they work. They all need to be regularly updated to fight off the most recent threats.

Most of the well-known ones have the same effect, just achieve them in a different way.

Is there Anything I Can do Myself?

Yes.

• Notice if your computer is slowing down or producing strange things like pop-ups you do not like.

• Notice the address of emails you receive an ensure the address they come from is the same as the name it appears to come from.

• Do not open unfamiliar pop-ups, attachments or strange emails with long email addresses that have lots of letters and numbers in the address.

• Clear out your temporary files regularly.

These are not all the threats that face us in this business, just some of the basic ones.

I know many of you are very clued-in and experienced. Not everyone is, and we all have to start somewhere.
