SALT is the Answer !

SALT is the answer to many of our social and communication problems. What SALT does is to help you to build positive climates. Positive Climates tend to result in positive outcomes. That is not always the result, but more times than not, it works. The analogy is simple. If you put a plant into a dry, hot, stony pot of earth, it probably will fade and die. Put the same plant into a fresh, moist, warm pot, and watch what happens . . . flowers, sweet aroma, fruit. The secret is in the environment. Positive environments tend to result in agreement, support, success, and SALT helps to build that environment.

S = STOP ! Stop arguing, accusing and blaming. Take charge of your emotions. Build a receptive climate.

A= Acknowledge ! Show respect for the other person’s opinions. Try to see the other person’s point of view. Build rapport.

L= Listen ! Ask open ended questions. Let the other person do most of the talking. Identify all the issues.

T= Talk ! Emphasize issues on which you agree. Work on issues on which you disagree. Brainstorm solutions. Compromise. Reinforce benefits from agreement.
