Unwanted Text in Website Header - How to Remove It?

Hi folks,

This is just a very brief post seeking help to remove unwanted text appearing in the header of one of my websites.

During the past week I joined the Awin affiliate programme.

Signing up to Awin was requirement of an affiliate advertiser whose products I promote on my site. The programme had moved from Share-a-Sale to Awin.

For some reason unknown to me the name Awin now appears at the top of my website header as shown in this image.

As I did not create the inclusion of that text, I do not know, and cannot find a way to remove it.

I have opened the site in an incognito browser I seldom use, only to find that Awin appears there too!

Your help would be appreciated.

Thank you.

If that text is in your website header, I think you can go to the site in site manager>appearance>customize>site identity. You might have put the line of text in either the title line or the tagline. Try that if you haven't.

Thanks very much for your message, Jim.
I eventually gave in and approached Site Support. The problem was fixed immediately!

Glad to here it.

Hi, Valerie

Go into "Elements" (only available in the Pro version of GeneratePress, for others reading) and "Hook" your code into the wp_head of the entire site.

Once you open Elements (in the appearance section of your back office) it will be obvious.

See the attached image.

This should solve your problem. 😊

P.S. For those who don't have GeneratePress Pro, you can do the same thing with the Ad Inserter or Header Footer plugins.

Thanks for your help, Frank.
I eventually approached Site Support and they fixed it immediately.

You’re welcome, Valerie.

The next time you have to add code, try using Elements in GP Pro.

Sometimes, when Site Support adds it, the code will disappear with plugin updates.

Frank, I did use the Elements in GP Pro, but I just couldn't get it to work. I managed to move the offending item from the top of the Header. It settled at the top of the Home page content and I could not find the necessary solution to move it from there.

However, I thank you for your advice regarding plugin updates. I will certainly watch for what you have warned me of.

Much appreciated!

It is probably where you added their code in the header

I had the same trouble recently, Go to
Appearance
Theme file editor
Header
Awin code goes under the head before the body.
Make sure you press save

best of luck

Peter H

Thanks very much, Peter for your response.

I found the code in the Header and have moved it.
It is now sitting under the header so I will find the right setting for it eventually.

I use Generate Press Premium and need to make the change through Elements.

Thanks again for your help.
Greatly appreciated.

Valerie

Nice going!

Good call Peter.

Hiding your light

What did Awin ask you to add to your site when you became an affiliate?

I agree. It has to be what has been placed or where.
I’m pretty sure I read one response elsewhere that the affiliate code had bee placed in the wrong spot.
Hmm. Stephen

That's what I'm getting at, Stephen. But I need to know what code Awin supplied and where it was supposed to go. I've never used them so don't know.

Setting an account up with Awin is complicated but I've checked the details I entered and cannot see any reason for their name to be in the header of my website.

Also, I have checked the theme I use which is Generate Press Premium and Awin does not appear in the Header Settings.

I have not placed any affiliate code within the Awin website.

The only affiliate code I've used so far is replacement code in the advertiser's website whose affiliate programme I promote.

I've checked the settings of my website theme and the header is clear of intrusions!

It's a mystery to me!

Each page has a header section, which starts with the html code <head> and terminates with </head>. The problem you've got is typically caused by affiliate code (which most likely starts with Awin) being inserted outside this section instead of inside it. So do you remember being asked to insert some code as part of the complicated process?

You won't find it in your theme or in either Awin's or the advertiser's website, neither of which you have access to. It's code placed on your website. Could you list the steps you had to take to on-board Awin?

I haven't inserted any code into Awin.

The only code I dealt with is changing the affiliate code in my website provided by Share-a-Sale and replacing it within one post on my website.

Awin was appearing on my website before replacing the Share-a-Sale affiliate code with the Awin affiliate code.

OK. When I've got a moment, I'll link up one of my websites to Awin and see if I can figure out where in the process it might have happened and how to fix it. I'll get back to you.

Hi Phil, it's very kind of you to think of taking that effort. I have found where the problem lies, due to Peter's response.

I discovered Awin within the Elements of Generate Press and have moved it from the top of the header. It's now sitting under the header and I need to find the correct setting to move it to where it won't be seen.

The strange thing is that I did not process that entry into my website. It must have happened automatically from the information I entered into Awin.

Again, many thanks for your kindness.

That was basically what I was suggesting. It was code that should have been between <head> and </head> but had been inserted outside it. As you suggest, possibly automatically.

I'm so glad you got it fixed but I'll probably go ahead with adding Awin just to get more insight. Thanks for highlighting this issue.

It would be great to learn about your experience with Awin should you decide to try it.

I'm pleased that this experience has been of interest.

You could always ask site support to help. I think as long as you’ve tried first they are pretty cool at helping.
I use Awin a bit, mainly for 2 things only and yes they can be difficult to navigate around.
I found this about Awin and must have more of a look. Like anything, it all takes time.. Stephen

Thanks very much, Stephen for your response including the link. I've just logged off for the night so will look at it tomorrow. And I will let you know how it goes!

I took your advice, Stephen and approached Site Support. The problem was fixed within a matter of seconds! I don't why I didn't think of that approach myself. I was sure worn out and completely inactive yesterday other than my request to those amazing helpful people who we never see but benefit so much from their abilities!

Site support are really great, and have saved me a few times.
One of the reasons this platform is so good.
Stephen

Absolutely, Stephen. Site Support is of great value to the WA platform. No other programme I had been involved with could provide such high quality of support.

I'd right click and inspect, see where that word is, try locate and delete. I hope you are able to figure it out. You may need to be in the html interface.

And there's no strawberries today, lol?

Oh dear, Abie. No strawberries. Oh well, I will survive!

I promise double by tomorrow lol I hope you are able figure it out.

Yeah, Abie. Tomorrow is a great day!

Yes, I do have it sorted thanks, due to Peter's response.

Awesomeness and that's great to know. Really happy for you.

Thanks for your kindness, Abie.
