Writer's CrampWriter's Camp Part Deux

This is part 2 of my "writer's cramp" series about writing for your website. This is TOO CRITICAL to write about in one post so, I will write as long as I feel it is useful to someone...

So, let's talk about hiring a freelance writer. I KNOW that we are not supposed to self-promote here, and I'm not (OK, I am...sort of).

Here's a question to ask yourself..."should I hire a writer". Good question and a question I address on my upcoming personal website for my writing company. NOT EVERYONE CAN WRITE WELL, ESPECIALLY FOR SEO (did I shout? Sorry). I still continue to have trouble with SEO and I have been doing it for a while now! It's not that you can't write. you might write really, really well but (here comes the "butt monkey") writing for the internet is a completely different beast.

Some differences include -

  • Spacing is different. See all of the spaces I am using here? You need to break you content up into easily "digestible" chunks as people do not read content, they scan it. To keep them engaged, you must break the content up
  • You Utilize Bulleted/Numbered Lists More Often. Another internet writer/freelancer "trick" of the trade. Bulleted/numbered lists break the content up even further. It draws the reader in and keeps them engaged and engagement is the name of the game (did you know the average reader only reads about 28% of you content?? ) Read this fascinating article on even more engagement trickshttp://conversionxl.com/10-useful-findings-about-h...
  • Paragraphs? What Paragraphs? Forget the paragraph, in the traditional sense of indentation. Indents drop off online (except in these lists...)
  • I Would Add More, But... People have very short attention spans online. Some will recommend writing a post or an article with upwards of 1,000 words! That's way too many! 500-800 word is about all that you can use to get your point across quickly enough to keep them there. Think about that, people are in such a hurry these days!

So, you might be a fantastic writer but you have other things to consider, structurally.

Another consideration is this. Do you have the time to keep writing fresh content? Most writers, such as myself, do this all day, for a living (or try to). 24-7. You, on the other hand, have a "real" job and a real life whereas writers, such as myself, have neither, lol! You might want to consider that as well.

Writers are not all that expensive nor do you need them every day, that's a beautiful part of it. You can use your writer a few times a month, once a week, etc, whatever you feel is necessary to keep your content fresh and alive.

As I have just about hit my personal word limit to keep you engaged, I will sign out for now and might have a part 3 as long as this remains useful to even 1 person. However, if you DO need a freelance writer, I am just an email away. And if I am not allowed to work for anyone on WA, you can always find a hungry writer out there ready to work for you (just don't be tempted to outsource...hmmm, can I feel a topic for part 3 coming??)

Cheers,

Debbe TxProWriter :)

Thanks, Evan!
Too bad I'm leaving at the end of the month!

Hi Debbe
Hope all is going ok for you, life can be challenging in these modern days. WA has been challenging for me,but I have found that sticking at it has opened up a world of possibilities..I so admire people who have been blessed with the abilty to write it is a true gift.It can be hisheartening when you create something and no one reads it, I know the feeling. Search your posts on google you may be pleasantly suprised. Best wishes for your future writing. Remember the old saying "" tomorrow is the first day in the rest of your life"".Take care.

I am planning to leave WA because, as I was going through a "Bootcamp" video, I came across yet ANOTHER video of Kyle requesting yet another page "dedicated" to the promotion of WA on our website and I had an epiphany - I truly believe that WA is more about THEIR bottom line than our "instruction" and their selfless service to the masses...I have NO issue with making a profit but, tell folks that's what you are doing, don't just shroud the whole thing in another agenda!!
On my website, I am TELLING my readership that I AM an affiliate marketer, I will be sharing products but, the products will be screened and checked for quality.
I am pointing my websites back to Namecheap at the end of the month then I am off to greener pastures. However, I will stick around as a free member, I suppose.
I might be seeing this all the wrong way but, I am SO jaded anymore that I have just decided to not trust anyone and look out for myself and my husband, and my dogs, of course.
I APPRECIATE your kind comments, on the other hand, which brightened my less than stellar day! Thanks for that! Remember, if you ever need a writer, I'm here and I charge a fair price...
