How to force external link to open in a new tab?

Most likely you will have to add a peace of code
"target="_blank"
There are some tutorials, try this: Banners : Banner Ads : Banner Links
When you add a link in the wordpress editor, click on the "gear" icon on the right end of the box. (see #1 below)
On the options pane that opens, check the box labeled "Open link in a new tab". (see #2 below)
Hey Bob, I have now done that to all my links in my main text, such as "get my recipe here", but I added the Walmart button, with html provided by them, to the sidebar via a text widget, so I'll have to look into the tutorials mentioned by jvranjes above.
You might want to look at the HTML they've provided. It wouldn't surprise me if they've included that target="_blank" portion in their code. (That target set to _blank is what causes the link to open in a new tab.)
actually they left it out, on purpose I guess, and I just put it in and it worked! I want it to open in a new tab, not the reverse. my husband showed me where to insert it. he doesn't know wordpress but he does know old school html. yay, so on with editing my latest bread making movie :-)

I got to the walmart affiliate program via googling walmart canada affiliate program - but the terms of agreement says:
unsuitable websites include but are not limited
Hi Sandy, just chiming in, this may be a long bow, but the WA servers are hosted out of the US, so technically if you have a site hosted on WA then it becomes a localized to the US. I am in NZ but still apply for northern hemisphere Affiliate programs We are actually leveraging off of the power of WA. Just a thought
But, yet, we are allowed to fill out those US tax forms that say we are foreigners, correct? ;-) B/c we are! Well good, b/c Walmart.com just accepted my application and Walmart.ca affiliate program website is a complete mess and and going down the drain from what I can see!
I've been trying to find a Canadian vendor for my exact bread machine that doesn't cost $248 (which it does on Amazon.ca) but I realized along the way that Walmart has all kinds of crap that I use. I got my machine at Sears Canada for $80 but I haven't been accepted by them yet and cj.com, where they are, is very difficult to navigate and understand. Best I have been able to do is post my machine from Amazon.ca with no price showing. I almost posted a very similar one instead, one with a decent price, and I may still go back to that. But, if Sears accepts me, they have my exact one for a decent price!
But I will sure try to rock Walmart, for sure. I used to use an actual paint brush for glazing bread, one from Kent, and I just got a real one ... from Walmart.
crap I finally finished the Linkshare signup and it doesn't have walmart canada on the merchant list. OMG! some sloppy walmart canada! plus, when i originally signed up for http://walmart.com by mistake it made me declare that i am a foreigner but then the agreement said i couldn't be with them if i was a foreigner. these things are not easy to sign up with! canadian tire doesn't have a program. so it's back to trying to hook up with sears on cj.com but i don't understand their site. sigh...
well it looks like i actually signed up for walmart.com not walmart.ca - so I better not use it if they approve me. i finally found the walmart.ca program page and I finally found where it says to join Linkshare, which I did when I accidentally signed up for walmart.com. I guess. This stuff ain't easy!
It sounds like Walmart Canada just copied over Walmart USA's terms and conditions without bothering to read them.
I'll find out. I apparently already signed up for Linkshare, when I was accidentally signing up for walmart.com. walmart.ca AM program looks pretty sloppy. links don't work on their program site. i just want to advertise a canadian ad for my bread machine where it is not $248, which it is on amazon.ca. but walmart doesn't seem to have it anyway. though i will want to be with them for other kitchen stuff.

my free site, which i abandoned over a month ago when i moved to premium membership, just got indexed by google. how does that affect my new site? should i delete all the conte
When you move a siterubix subdomain site to a personally-owned domain using the siterubix "Move" function, the WA software automatically puts a bit of code (a permanent 301 redirect) into the old site. With that redirect in place, all accesses of your old site (even your own) get redirected to the new site. The old siterubix subdomain site no longer exists as a separate site. Leaving the old site in place as it is will let google know that the content it's indexed now exists at your new site.
Keep that website up.... do Not copy content from it to your new one. But, use an anchor text link to your new one. It will actually help your SEO. The Definitive Guide to Anchor Text and Backlinks
thanks I will read your guide! all of the stuff on the old one is also on my new one from when i migrated, though. there wasn't a whole lot, but all of it is on my new one too. that's what i am worried about.
Ah, then there is nothing to worry about. WA has a built-in system that re-directs everything from the old site to the new one.
