What's Your Morning Ritual?

I have always struggled with sticking to a healthy morning routine and have gone through phases where I've made no conscious effort to even practice one. My main issue is allowing the day's tasks, responsibilities, worries, etc. flood my brain directly upon waking up or reaching over to grab my cell phone to unnecessarily check in with the world. I am an easily distracted person so removing distractions has helped me immensely. Recently I've begun rethinking my morning ritual and have, for the first time in my life, decided to commit myself to a set morning practice for 1 month in an attempt to form a good habit (I started this morning!). I want to first share with you my personal morning ritual plan and a recent source of inspiration that gave me the push I needed to refocus on this most important part of the day, and then invite you to share what your morning routine is! FYI, there will certainly be days when I miss one of these. I'm just aiming to complete at least 3 of them. I'm not perfect...

My 1-month morning ritual commitment:

  1. Relax! Upon waking, do not just leap out of bed. Lay still with eyelids closed and practice some breathing/relaxation techniques before getting out of bed. TIP: I removed my cell phone from my night stand to eliminate this unwholesome source of distraction. I've formed the bad habit of rolling over to reach for it as soon as I wake up. Time to cut that out!

  2. Hydrate. I keep a full 16-oz glass of water on my night stand to drink following my relaxation practice. Your body needs this right away!

  3. Make the bed. I will complete this first small task of the day to give myself encouragement to perform other tasks. I also do a bit of tidying up at this point to remove external distractions. “If you see distraction externally, you end up creating an internally distracted state.” – Tim Ferriss

  4. Take a cold shower. The benefits of taking cold showers is something I learned about several years ago and have mainly been taking them to recover from intense workouts but lately I've experienced the benefits of starting my day with one. It really gets you up and running! No joke. The best coffee replacement I've found. Here are some of the benefits: www.lifehack.org/articles/lifestyle/surprising-ben...

  5. Break the fast. Juice first! I'm a big proponent of morning juicing so this needs to be on the list. I don't rush into it in the morning but I do consume it on an empty stomach which allows the vitamins and minerals in the juice to go straight to your bloodstream. This is such a great way to start the day right with a noticeable boost in energy among all the other powerful benefits. An hour or so later I consume a huge healthy breakfast!
  6. I'm still working out the tail-end of my morning practice but it mainly involves sitting down with my fresh juice (or tea) to simply do some distraction-free writing whether it be writing down some goals, setting new ones, or just writing whatever comes to mind. I find this to be a therapeutic way of working out any issues and just getting my thoughts visible. It also helps me refine my ideas and stimulates me to thoroughly explore a line of thought.

Now check out Tim Ferriss's podcast on his 5 morning rituals that help him win the day. It's this podcast that gave me the fresh enthusiasm to recommit to a healthy morning routine. I really needed that and hope this gets others back on track too! http://fourhourworkweek.com/2015/09/18/5-morning-r...

So what's your current morning routine or what would you like it to be?

Cold showers in the morning are a must!

My morning ritual: oil pulling (look it up, for all the benefits!) for 20 mins. upon awakening. Rinse out, brush teeth and tongue. (Haven't gotten any colds, etc. in over 3yrs). Drink 16 oz. water, sometimes warm lemon and water. Practice yoga and meditation for about 45mins. Then Juice and breakfast....coffee doesn't give me the energy as all of these do, so not necessary for me in a.m.

I learned from the best :)

I joined WA on Sept.8th and decided if I was going to do this, then I needed to make changes in my life starting with my morning routine.I get up each morning between 0530 and 0600 and start the day with a glass of water. Then put my headphones on and listen to a podcast by Benny Hsu or Pat Flynn while I make a half pot of coffee.

While the coffee is brewing I cut up fruits for our breakfast and vegetables for our lunch.I'll drink a cup of coffee and stretch.Next up is a 30 minute workout routine that works for me.After the workout It's time to shower, drink some more coffee and go outside to water our garden, or some other housework stuff. All the while listening to podcasts instead of Pandora.Eat breakfast which consists of a small bowl of organic granola and fresh strawberries, blueberries, blackberries, and raspberries.Load the truck and head to our shop around 0930.

Our evening routine is eat dinner after we get home which is between 20:00 and 21:00,and then go for a 30 minute walk.I try to watch WA videos when the walk is over instead of MLB Network etc.

So far so good.I've worked out every single day since Sept. 8th ! This is important to me since I want to prove to myself that I can follow through on something I started.Hopefully, these changes in my morning routine will help me as I begin this journey at WA :)

I'm 72. Up at 6.00, shower, cup of coffee, cigarette, breakfast and start checking and replying to emails unless I'm going to play golf.

Power to you my friend!
I too have been working on refining my morning rituals. Although I am still not perfect at being an early riser. I am better at it then ever before.

I like to get up, do some basic stretches. (Get the blood flowing so it's hard to just collapse and fall asleep again.) At this time I will also go to the bathroom. Then I offer a morning prayer.

I will then do some exercise. Most mornings I go for a walk. These early helps me to wake up. (Especially as it starts to get colder.) Then I will also do a basic workout, with push up and sit ups etc.

I then be sure I have some water, if I haven't already. Then I shower and dress. Have my morning smoothie. Then I read and watch motivational videos.

Then I head to work. That's pretty much what I got for now. Still working to refine everything.

When it all comes down to it. I have to get better at having a productive evening routine. etc.

My Grizzly Mentor has taught me the importance of being an early rising, and I have seen the benefits.

Great post, all the best.
Regards,
Evan

Thanks for your comment Even :) I love your a.m. routine! Stretching is a great idea when you first get up-added to my list. What I didn't mention was my CrossFit training post breakfast...then it's time for actual work!

Glad you brought up evening routines. That's also something I need to work on...

Cheers!

With productive mornings like yours success is well on its way. I'm glad I could join the conversation. I look forward to hearing from you in the future. Thanks. It would be cool if we could both do a post on our evening routines...What do you think?

Well, I have a horrible morning ritual which I need to get out of. I go to sleep about 6 AM and usually wake up about 1 PM :/

I've been there too my friend...When I first started my business I would pull all-nighters all the time but it caught up to me quickly. I need my rest. Some people prefer to work through the night/early morning so if you're more productive at that time, do it up!

Yeah, that's when I can work the best xD
