Introduction

Some writers would argue that the headline is more important than the article itself, as it’s the very first thing people will look at and if it doesn’t interest they won’t read further.

The aim of this tutorial is to look at different techniques you can use to make your headlines more compelling and attract a greater number of readers.

This tutorial includes:
  • Headline tips
  • Use of numbers
  • Interesting adjectives
  • Headline magnets
  • Headline formulas

Look at the line just under the black WA logo near the top left of the page. It's in the "Authoring & Writing Content" classroom.

To go directly to this classroom, hover your mouse over the word "Classrooms" in the left column of the main WA page and then click on the "Authoring & Writing Content" menu item. Doing that will open the classroom. Across the top of the page, there are tabs for Questions & Answers, Tutorials, Videos, and Courses.

Enjoyed the examples of headline formats.. The one that really drew me in was, "How to Cut your Energy Bill by 50%". I found myself wanting to read on! Bunny.

This lesson is grade A Awesome. My only question is if we use these types of words in our headlines do we first have to see if these key words are good key words for our niche? With proper fruit hanging and good competition?
Reply
BIS Premium
Thanks for the compliment. Yes I would always check your keywords before you use them in a heading. :) Beverley

Great tutorial. I do have a question: As well as all these tips, am I right in thinking the headline also has to comprise of a previously researched keyword and sound natural too? Sometimes it seems impossible to come up with a keyword, make it intriguing to the reader and sound natural.
Reply
BIS Premium
Hi
Yes - you'll want to include a keyword and your headline must sound natural. If it sounds grammatically horrible, don't use it. Also be realistic, you probably won't always come up with a really good headline, but the point is that you ought to be trying. It is one of those things that get better with practice.

Hey Beverley, I finally got around to reading some of your stuff here at WA and I'm totally blown away. I've seen you in the chat talking to others about some writing class or something you were putting on or are putting on.
I've been so busy with clients and now that I've cleared my plate to the point I can really dedicate to WA I'd love to know more about writing great content.
I printed this entire tutorial out so I can see it while I'm writing content. This was such an eye opener.
Anyway, I'd love to know what class/course or whatever it was that you were putting on that so many were seeing great results with.
Have an awesome Day
~ Audrey
