Where to Begin As a Webmaster?

The most ideal place to get started is still that former Google’s advice – keep building out relevant, quality content that answers your users’ questions, meets their objectives, and provides real value.

This old advice remains unchanged irrespective of any update Google rolls out to its search algorithms. Start leveraging the free content writing tools already discussed in the previous training resources to start producing great, quality and relevant content for your prospective and existing users.

Some may want to believe BERT has just replaced RankBrain! This is not real. Despite the introduction of BERT, RankBrain is still in use no matter what the update to search algorithms is. BERT is just a major extra technique for understanding search queries and content.

If it occurs to Google’s system that a search query can be understood better with the aid of BERT, it will use just that. However, if the system thinks a search query is understood better with the aid of RankBrain, it will use that instead. For understanding queries, a single search query can leverage multiple methods, including RankBrain and BERT.

Great information on BERT. I just read up on it the other day as my traffic defnitely took a bit of a hit but it's seems to be bouncing back. Your training confirmed my understanding that the update is about understanding user intent and the actual context of the content.

This, of course, means that targeting single phrases is becoming redundant and you should cover a topic as thoroughly as possible. Especially targeting misspelled or incomplete sentences will be redundant as Google will know what the user actually means.

It sounds like BERT will simply make things easier for all of us when we are searching for things on Google. When we use natural language we will get more relevant results.

For our websites, I think you have hit the nail on the head - we just need to keep producing quality content and offering answers to people's questions. Then we will be ok.
