Before I go into how to manually filter the referral spam, there’s an option in Google analytic for Bot Filtering you might wish to check.

  • Go to the admin tab of your site, and select the View Settings
  • Check the box Exclude all hits from known bots and spiders, save and it’s done.

As for the manual approach,

You could check your list of referrals under Reporting, on Acquisitions > All Traffic > Referrals.

Here I will take the example of get-your-social-buttons.info and how to filter it.

The steps are similar to filtering your visit, but slightly different in configurations.

  • Under Configure the filter
    • Filter Name- Name your filter, for example, referral filter
    • Filter Type- Check Custom.
    • Under the Filter Field- choose Campaign Source
    • And in Filter Pattern, paste the expression get-your-social-buttons.info

  • Save and Google Analytics now filter the referral get-your-social-buttons.info instantly.
Repeat the same steps for other referral spam you wish to filter. Something to take note is not all referrals are considered spam, some are good referrals, for example, referrals from a site where you have your guest post, you would want to keep those.

Tashi,
After I applied the segment with conditions it did not excluded the bots I excluded, when I see historic data. It shows same report as All Session. Can you please tell me why so and how can I fix it? Thanks,
Chittranjan

This is great training and I was filtering referral sites individually like this for a while but I found a way to set up a filter to block out all the spam without having to make multiple filters.

I can't remember off the top of my head what the name of the website was that had the walkthrough but it involved including valid host names instead of blocking out the individual bots..

I really like this for a couple of reasons. Theres no need for setting up multiple filters and because it blocks out the spam before it ever hits your site (preventative! thats the word needed!)..

I haven't had a single issue since I implemented this filter, if I remember what the site was I'll get back to you. It could possibly be in one of my recent blogs here but I'm not sure. Otherwise, I'll just have to create training for it!

Thank you very much for the info on filtering the past results, I was wondering about that and didn't get the chance to look it up.

Take it easy man,
-Zach
