FUNCTIONALITY OF THE WORDPRESS EDITOR
When you want to add images into your WordPress content you would click on the “Add Media” button above the toolbar menu in the upper left corner, see above image. A screen will appear where you can either load images you already have saved in your Media Library or you can upload from your computer.
In the above image you have your Insert/Edit Link (Red) and Remove Link (Orange) buttons. The latter is pretty much self-explanatory. When you have a link within your content that you want to remove but still keep the text, you would click on the link within your WordPress editor and then click the Remove Link button.
When creating a link, you would first highlight the text within your content that you want to make into a link and then you click the Insert/Edit Link button. Upon doing so the Insert/Edit Link UI will appear, see below image. It is here that you will add the details for the link.
In the top field you will first add the destination link (where link is going to) and then the bottom field will display the text of the link. It is always best to use Anchor Text for your links this way it will help with your SEO. Example, if I wanted to link to my Wealthy Affiliate Review I would make those three words my actual link.
Then below those two fields is the “Open link in a new window/tab” check box. Though many people seem to have their preferences, the general rule of thumb for better SEO is to only open a new window/tab if the link is going to another website. If you are linking to another page on your own website, you should not click this check box.
In the above image you see I have the “Text” tab circled. Do you know when to use the Text editor? Any time you need to paste HTML code into your content such as an affiliate banner image or a widget. But another thing the Text editor is good for is stripping out the hidden code that is embedded into MS Word docs.
Since I do all my content writing in MS Word and MS Word contains hidden formatting code within it, you cannot paste it into the Visual editor without having some kind of formatting issues. I have seen many people say to paste the MS Word doc into Notepad and then recopy it and paste it in the WordPress Visual editor. It is a lot quicker to paste it into the Text editor.
And the large X symbol you see under the “Text” tab is for turning on/off Distraction-Free Writing Mode. When turned on, both the left and right side menus of the WordPress editor will disappear leaving just the center area of the editor where we create our content.
NEXT UP = Setting your Categories, Tags and Featured Images for blog postsThis was a great tutorial and you covered so many things that I have been wondering about. Maybe I did just not get far enough in the Get Started Training but for me it was all very apropos!
Thanks for the patient and very good work. Now I have to go back and fix things on my site.
