1. To improve security:

Leftover themes and plugins increase the opportunity for malicious guys. Why leave things on your site that may make you vulnerable to attack?

It is easy to forget about old themes and plugins you tried and did not use. But they constitute an opening for security issues.

2. To improve performance:

By deleting old themes and plugins you're not using, you reduce complexity. And thus, make it less confusing for other people that work on your site.

You also reduce the size of your backups.

And you could even get a performance improvement.

    Thank you, Henry.
I'd heard extra plugins could slow site but not about the hackers.
I have way to many themes, I will be cleaning off.
I enjoyed the whimsical "continues next page" .
    Was that a canva production?

    Hi Barb,
I'm glad to hear from you. Thanks for stopping by and sending a comment. I hope you're doing well.

I use Canva a lot! I liked it. And yeah, there are some watercolor effects you can put below your texts! And they make them look cool.

They were a nice change from the more businesslike trainings, Henry.
I've just started canva, but I've been using 3D Paint, which worked fine for my logo creation.

3D Paint is great too. They have upgraded and have a bunch of cool features. Creating or rebranding the logo of our site is exciting! I hope you have had a ton of fun with the process.

    Great tutorial, Henry.
There is no use having so many plugins, except they are used regularly.
    Thank you.

Hi, yeah. Exactly. This article is a reminder to delete these plugins and themes if we're not using them.

Good advice Henry. I always try to keep my back-office clean. However, I do have a plugin that I only activate to use once every now and then. Jim

Hi, Jim. Yeah, that's a good point. I also have a plugin I don't delete because I activate it once in a while. Thank you for mentioning that exception.

Great advice Henry. We really can accumulate masses of plugins which can slow out website speed. I've paired mine down to about 8 which keeps things running smoothly.

If I want to try a new plugin I check my site speed first and then load the new plugin and check my speed again.

    Great training thanks.

    Hi Lily,

Yeah, we should always be watching out which plugins slow down our site. That's a good practice to test speed before and after installing.

Anything we can do to improve our site's responsiveness should be welcome. And if it's as easy as deleting themes and plugins, it's a no-brainer.

Some time ago, I was at the back office of one of my sites. I noticed there were a dozen different themes I had downloaded. And I had also accumulated several plugins (that I had not used in ages). But then I got distracted posting an article. And the next day kept busy researching for another one. And the themes and plugins keep on there on my site.

So, the second time I noticed the themes and plugins, it took me a minute to delete them.

Others may be going through the same thing. And it could be because they are not aware it's good to delete the ones we don't use. Or it could be that they just get distracted with so many other tasks.

Thank you very much, Lily, for stopping by and leaving a comment. I greatly appreciate it. Thank you very much for all the training you continually upload to Wealthy Affiliate. It has helped me so many times. I am grateful!
