For the sake of our tutorial, we’re going to assume you have a site all about Affiliate Marketing. You know your target demographic, and what kinds of advertisers sell products that will appeal to your readers. Let’s apply to a company that sells “Internet and Online” products, specifying “Development.”

You come to a screen with a list of companies who fit in this category.

Ok, “fotolia” looks interesting. They sell stock photos for websites, and anybody doing online marketing should be interested in that. On the right side is an “apply” button. Click there.

If you’re not sure they’d look good on your website, go ahead and click “view links.” You can see what kinds of graphics they use in their banners. I rejected a couple of possible companies because the only banners they offered were HUGE, or came in garish colors that I thought would look offensively out of place on my website.

Once you've clicked "Apply," a pop-up will appear, telling you that this advertiser has to approve your application. So far, every one I have applied for at LinkShare says the same thing. This confused me at first; I had assumed that simply by being accepted by LinkShare I was now already accepted by all their advertisers. Not so.

Read the Terms and Conditions, then check the acceptance box and click OK. Most of the TaC are standard, common sense requirements that you must not steal, represent their company badly, or spam the entire population of the world with their logo. If you behave, they will pay you.

You get an acknowledgment. Click OK again, and now you wait. Notice will come in your email shortly, letting you know if you have been accepted or rejected.

They're asking for my social security number, should I give it to them ?

Who is asking? Some Affiliate Programs need it for tax purposes, especially if you are the "Owner" of your company, which in this case you are, then they will need it for the W-9.

idk. I never read this article before I signed up with them. I signed up with all the affiliate programs on impulse because it was in the training. I gave them my SSN.

After I signed up with them, and researched their products, they didn't offer anything that I wanted on my site, so I don't even use them.

I won't have any income through them, so I don't have to worry about them when tax time comes.

Yeah, you should. At least if you ever want to be paid. :-) I know it feels really weird to be giving that out on the internet, but in this case it's like applying for a job. There is certain information they need in order to pay you.

BEWARE OF OBTAINING EIN. Do not obtain an EIN until you begin earning money. If you obtain an EIN and make no money, you will need to file a tax return. There are various classifications when applying for an EIN. If you are incorporated and select the incorrect EIN classification, you will have issues with the IRS. Talk with a tax professional before applying for an EIN. Debbie

Thankful for this tutorial. I guess I would have to get an EIN then? I say it was optional so I left it out. I am not given a SSN option because of my geographical location . Not familiar with those kinds of things at all. Never dealt with taxes before so I am abit stuck on those parts.
