Many year ago now, I read the book "Multiple Streams of Income, by Robert Allen. the title embodies his thesis, that one should generate several (or more) sources of personal income instead of relying on just one, such as your main job. His ideas resonated with me and I remain committed to the generation of multiple streams of income to this day.
