I had done this with several of my pages a couple months ago and as you can see my rankings went up slightly but by improving my CTR I was able to get a lot more traffic.
Under dates in Search Console you can compare to the previous period to see how your growth is looking.
Plus, this site is only 6 months old so I'm hoping with more content and rankings I can continue to see nice gains in traffic.

Great info. The frustration I have is that sometimes Google seems to override my meta description, and choose their own snippets from my site. If anyone knows how to prevent this I would love to know.
