To select a theme different from the options, you can upload your own photo to create your own theme.
To use your own photo, on the Pick Your Theme box, at the bottom right hand corner will be a button that say "My Photos" - I have highlighted it in yellow to indicate where to look:
Once you select the My Photos, you will have the following new options:
A background image is another word for "theme". You have the option of the following:
- Featured: Takes you back to the Google themes
- My Photos: This shows any previously uploaded photos you have on your computer. These could be your profile photos, photos from posts you have written and can also be organized by date.
- Upload a Photo: Allows you to upload a new photo that is not listed in 'My Photos'
- Paste a URL: If there is a photo you want to upload from a URL
- Recently Selected: Any photo that you selected recently and thus, may be a favorite of yours.
Make your selection to have your own photo as your GMail theme.

I was thinking about creating similar Gmail Theme blog for my website, but i thought traffic is very low and would not be worth for me to write a blog :)
