Plan Your Blog Outline

An outline for a blog post is the same as preparing a meal without all the ingredients.

When I look at people who research, collate, and write simultaneously, I picture someone running to the grocery store whenever he needs something while preparing a meal.

The secret to my ability to write long blog posts in 3-4 hours is outlining. Before you start writing your blog post, it is important to have an outline.

A blog post outline can feel like extra work at first. But it's worth it for the ease it brings to your writing process.

These are my top tips for drawing outlines.

  • I create the article's goal, the keywords that will be covered, and the headings/subheadings that I want to discuss.
  • I keep a list of any resources that I might need while writing the blog post.
  • To avoid researching while writing, I organize all of my research in my outline.

A well-constructed outline will prevent you from drifting off-topic. You may get distracted while writing blog posts. As an avid blogger, this is a huge mistake.

You'll be able to write the main points in outline form. This will give you more clarity and structure. Dynalist is my go-to tool for a blog post outline or you can create your own.

Explore Dynalist

This tool allows you to create a blog outline with unlimited indentations so you can drill down on subtopics.

Excellent training, Lily.
I actually do everything you suggest except use Dynalist. I love free software like this though and will be exploring its capability within my process.

I use "notion.os" for everything right now (also free) ... research materials and writing and much more. One of the value adds of the notion software is that I can format everything within it and then copy to wp where I add images. Also, I can use it on Windows, macOS, ios or Android, online or offline.

I hope you don't mind the question... does Dynalist work in various environments and how easily does it copy to WP?
Thanks again.

Great Post Lily. I read another post the other day and the suggestion was to write your introduction last. I was always told what you have outlined.

Very informative and the Explore Dynalist sounds very helpful.

Personally, I like to write mine in sequence Yvonne or I forget what I want to say but everyone is different. There is no right way just whatever works for you and gets the flow going.

Hi Stephen, I tried Dragon years ago but I had to talk like a baritone for it to register my voice and I don't speak in a high voice. I'm sure they have improved over the last 20 years.Lol

Wow Lily! When I first started blogging I used a similiar formula, but I'd forgotten just how I went about. You've brought it all back to me. Thank you my friend. Jim
