Performing a proper keyword research
For me, keyword research is a very important step towards ranking high on google. When doing a keyword research it is better to find keywords that have moderate or low competition.
It is tempting to go for those keywords that pull a lot of traffic in a month but these keywords usually have a lot of competition and ranking high is very hard. Go for the low hanging fruit as Kyle puts it.
"Low hanging fruits", also known as long tailed keywords are easier to rank for. They are specific and target a particular population.
For example, if I was to write a post about strollers and picked the keyword strollers for my topic, it will be near impossible to rank high for this keyword. The keyword strollers is searched about 5040 times a month and it has a competition of about 265.
If on the other hand I go more specific and I chose the keyword uppababy vista stroller instead, I will improve my chances of ranking high. Uppababy vista stroller gets 321 searches a month and a competition of about 150. That's better that the first keyword but it could be even better.
To get to the low hanging fruit, you will need to be even more specific. The keyword uppababy vista stroller 2017 is just that. It gets about 72 searches a month and has a competition of 63.
I hope you get the idea. As your keywords become more specific, the searches per month drop but your chances of ranking high increases.
When you rank high for a keyword, chances are you will rank high for other related keywords. So you could end up with multiple low hanging keywords that combine to bring a lot of traffic to your site.
