Did you know that Wordpress has it's own simple built-in image gallery ?

And I try to rather use that, than any Gallery Wordpress plugin if I can, because plugins are known to drain your website for speed, and I hate that. I want my website to be fast and you do too. The built-in gallery in Wordpress is good enough unless you need to have a lot of fancy effects when showing your images.

It is quite simple to use and to insert the gallery, this is how you do it, Click the Add Media button above the text editor then theMedia Library opens up, the same way as when you are inserting an image. Then click onCreate Gallery and select the images you want to appear in the new gallery.

By default, it will show you the already uploaded images if you need to upload the image you want to use, do it the same way as you normally upload an image to the media library.
When you have selected all the images you want to appear in the gallery, click the Create New Gallery button, then the window opens up with only the selected images and in the menu to the right some gallery settings to edit the gallery appears.

Gallery settings are simple and contain only a few options.

  1. Link to, Media File will open the image in full size, Attachment page will open the image in a preformatted WordPress page, that you can edit and add content to.
  2. Columns, specify how many thumbnail columns to use, amount depends on your theme and page size, adjust it to fit your page size.
  3. Random order, click this if you want to show your thumbnails in random order.
  4. Size, Which size of the image you want to use in your gallery, also to be adjusted according to page size.

You can also rearrange the order of the images by clicking and dragging the images in your gallery.
One last thing you can include HTML code in your captions, insert the HTML code in the caption field below the image, useful to add links in your image caption.

When you are pleased with the settings, click insert gallery and voila, you have a gallery in your post.

This is how it looks like in the editor

And this is how it looks like in the preview of the post

There you have it without any need for a fancy plugin, that most probably will slow down your page, better to avoid the plugin's if you can do without. Next, I'll guide you through kow to add a featured Image to your post, so pay attention, no breaks yet :)

I want to have some fun with my affiliate website catering to veterans. We will see how this goes. I'm playing all the characters....small audio files, using army lingo terms to rate other affiliate programs before I start my review of WA. Maybe a bit too off beat, but sometimes off beat is just the right beat....and sometimes its not. No wonder I always loved that jingle, sometimes you feel like a nut.

i cant get my columns to come in 4 but the editor shows 4 till i get to my page. then its 3. also i have a larger pic at top and the editor shows the caption centered but the page has it off center.
I fix it everywhere but the page still off centers it.

Great training article. Had I searched this hours ago, I would have saved myself a lot of time (and frustration) and the temptation to throw my laptop on the floor and stomp on it like my namesake in the cartoon...Wreck-It Ralph!! LOL! ;)

Lesson learned...next time I'll search when I'm stuck since there's a good chance it's been encountered before and there's some training and/or solution.

Big thanks.
