It is often annoying to see the "404-page not found" while trying to search for a piece of information on the internet.

Not only does the 404 error have a negative impact on users, it also affects the activities of Google crawlers on your website which could, in turn, affect your SEO. It is, therefore, necessary to quickly identify, fix, 301-redirect, or disavow all the 404-related errors.

Causes of Error 404

A number of factors are responsible for the 404 error message.

  • Deleted or Removed Pages: Web pages could be removed because the content is already outdated. This practice is common with online store owners.
  • Domain Transfer: Changes such as domain transfer or website re-launch can cause 404 errors. The URLs that belong to a former domain should be duly redirected to the new site. You can also use 301 redirects for this purpose.
  • URL Restructuring: Changes in the name of a directory can result in URLs changing. The redirect should be implemented to avoid 404 errors.
