BONUS. This Page Has Been Added to the Original Tutorial.

As Stacydee has suggested, I am adding a quick tutorial on Watermarks.

You have created your images, posted it on your blog and a month later you realized that some other site stole your image... that doesn't feel good, does it?

You can prevent most of image theft if you simply add a watermark to your image. A watermark is a logo or text. Often people use their name, site name or URL as a watermark.

Here is an very quick way of creating a basic watermark with GIMP.

1. Open your image in GIMP and select the Text Tool:

Your text options are where the arrow is pointed. You can change the color, font, size, etc.

2. Add Text.

Click and drag across the image, this will add a text box where you will write your Watermark Text. Then type whatever you want/need:

3. Change Opacity

On the right side menu you will see the OPACITY slider. Move it to the left to make your watermark text more discreet and less bright. You want your watermark to be visible but you don't want to concentrate on it instead of your image:

4. Complete the Image

You need to merge your original image with your watermark. For this you will right click on the watermark (text) field in the top right corner, right above your main image layer, then select Merge Down:

5. Save New Image

Finally, save it as a NEW Image. If you just click SAVE you will override your original image. It's always a good idea to keep the original image and the new edited copy, with your watermark for instance.

Enjoy your photos :)

Thanks Alex - great tutorial! And I appreciate the tip on using GIMP. I used to use a shareware image editor several years ago but have not been able to find it. It looks like GIMP will do the trick. Thanks again for all the effort you put into this!

Also, if you have a picture program (photoshop/corel or something like it) then add a transparent layer to your images with your domain name in just text over them, mark them as yours.

That's a good idea. I will try to see how to do it with GIMP and I will add it to this training. Thanks for the suggestion ;)

No problemo, I was pretty happy when I figured that one out, I tell ya!
Additionally, I put the "Hover Pin It" button plugin on my site that has the most images so those who choose to Pin my images have no choice but to promote my domain name. ;)
