As I said earlier, the tabbed content is extremely useful and can be used almost everywhere ...
However, there are a few things you should keep in mind while implementing tabbed navigation:
- first you should outline the information architecture so you can make better tab-related decisions
- you should use short and predictable category names
- don't tab together categories that are not similar in nature (in a logical sense)
- the selected tab should be prominently marked to clearly indicate the current location
- avoid using multiple rows of (stacked) tabs!
- you should use and maintain a consistent tab order on each page, otherwise your information architecture could be confusing
- if is possible, avoid using multiple tabbed solutions with different number of tabs (within the same site)
- the tabbed content area should be logically connected to the "regular" content area it controls in order to make clear the scope of the tabs
