When we talk of search engine algorithms, backlinks have continued to pass the test of time. As such, if you are targeting receiving free traffic from Google, you must understand how backlinks work.

Backlinks are links placed on external websites. That is why they are called to as external links. The target when it comes to getting these links should be getting quality links and not accumulating lots of irrelevant links. When we talk about relevant and quality links, we refer to links from reputable sources. The days when website articles rank on Google with lots of irrelevant links have gone. The big giant has changed its algorithm, reputation, and quality now count.
You know that Google has continued to change and improve their PageRank algorithm. Now they have moved pass when they only evaluate your content. They now evaluate your content, the number of websites linking to it.
Like I mentioned earlier, the focus is on quality links. As such, there are some types of links you should prioritize while there are others that must not see the days light on your website. I certainly can remember the days when buying backlinks was the going thing ( 5-10 years ago.). I never did it because it is hard to get rid of them. I remember some people talking about looking rank over night because of buying bad backlinks,
You conclusion is right on. Just like you are the architect of your business, the same applies to your link building. It is all up to you. You should ensure your links are relevant and authoritative.
This is especially true. Avoid buying links like a plague, be patient about the whole process.
