GIMP Preferences: User Interface
The User Interface preference category has three sections:
- Language
- Previews
- Keyboard Shortcuts
Language
We have literally thousands of internet marketers here at WA from all over the world whose native language is different from English. That is why I really like GIMP and especially like theLanguage preference because you can set the language GIMP uses to any language from the drop down list. You will be amazed at how many different languages are available.
Previews
For Previews you can control previews that will be shown in the layers and channels dialogs. You also have the option to change the size of the previews. The default is set to Medium. However you can change the previews size to any of the following:
- Tiny
- Very Small
- Small
- Medium
- Large
- Very Large
- Huge
- Enormous
- Gigantic
One thing I wish they would do is include the dimensions next to each of these options so you will have an idea on how big is "huge" vs "Enormous". We might see that in another larger version of GIMP. As mentioned before in Introduction to GIMP these sets of tutorials are done using GIMP 2.8.
Keyboard ShortcutsGIMP already has many keyboard shortcuts installed that can be very useful, especially when you begin to feel comfortable with GIMP and know how to navigate between dialogs easier. For instance:
- Help is F1
- New Toolbox is CTRL-B
- New Layer is Shift-CTRL-N
- Duplicate Layer Shift-CTRL-D
If, however, you wanted to program your own keyboard shortcuts into GIMP that will allow you to use the program more easily, this is where you can do that. To change a keyboard shortcut, click on the button to Configure Keyboard Shortcuts:
You will see the following menu:To change a keyboard shortcut, click on the corresponding row and enter a new keyboard shortcut. Then click on the button to Save Keyboard Shortcuts Now:
You can also reset keyboard shortcuts to default values or remove all keyboard shortcuts. A new shortcut will override any previous function which that key combination previously called up. So selection your shortcuts carefully. For instance, if you give a new meaning to F1, then you will no longer be able to use F1 to call up Help.
Now, let's move on to the Theme preference......
