GIMP Preferences: Environment
There are three sections in the Environment preference:
- Resource Consumption
- Image Thumbnails
- Document History
Resource Consumption
The Resource Consumption preferences allow you to configure several factors affecting the GIMP's memory usage. This preference depends on how much computer RAM (random access memory) you have available. If you have plenty of RAM available, you can increase the numbers. The more you increase the numbers, the better performance and more flexibility you will witness with GIMP. However, if your computer is low on RAM, then you may want to decrease these numbers, which will also decrease the performance you can achieve with GIMP.
If you are one of those who puts all of your files, images and documents in the cloud such as in Google Drive, then you may have enough RAM, you can increase these numbers in the Resource Consumption preference to get better performance.
If you are someone who saves everything in your local drive then you may wish to conserve.
Image Thumbnails
The Image Thumbnails are stored in a common area so other applications are able to use the thumbnails which GIMP generates.
By clicking on the drop-down arrow on the Size of Thumbnails you will see three options:
- No Thumbnails
- Normal (128x128)
- Medium (256x256)
You ca disable thumbnails completely by selecting No Thumbnails. You can also change the maximum file size for thumbnails.
Document History
The document history gives you the flexibility to keep your recent work stored in the Recently Used list which can be accessed by going to File > Open. Below you will see a file I started working on in Introduction to GIMP which was of a picture of my black cat.
You can also select a file name and get and was able to see a preview of my file. Below you will see a picture of my cat.Next, we will cover the Interface preference.
