Some unsubscribers are known to troll, and some leave errant comments and reviews. Over-sharing your list can also lead to a decrease in click-through and open rates. You can avoid this with a little thought.

You can avoid sharing too much by segmenting your lists according to specific parameters. Then, tailor your messages to your targeted audience based upon those parameters.

Follow the Thought Leaders

It is a good strategy to watch what others do in marketing. If you want to see the email habits of the best people in your industry, your competitors or marketing influencers, then look at their strategies and determine how they are doing.

Track the frequency with which thought leaders and influencers send emails. Is it rare? Do they send three times per week? Are they seasonal? Is it tied to holidays? Influencers and thought leaders are likely to have done extensive research and created email schedules that work.

Does it Work?

It is easy to see the true success or failure of your email marketing campaigns. It is in your data, Also known as hiding in plain view. While there are some who pay third-party vendors or agencies to create email marketing campaigns for them, those who don't need to do so should be looking at the data.

You need to know things like open rates, click through-rates, conversions and any other relevant data that can help you achieve your marketing goals. These types of analytics and data tracking capabilities are standard in any email tool.

Better tools will produce real-time reports, and provide easy-to-read dashboards that can be accessed quickly for reference.

You should also review all the other information points that are more complex and therefore harder to measure.

I know I have had to unsubscribe to some emails because they would actually send 2-4 emails a day. I am more likely to read emails that come once or twice a week. I have also found that some lists I signed up for would say that they don't sell my email, but I would sign up in a way to see if I got emails I didn't sign up for and that happens quite often. Are they actually selling my email or do you know why this happens? Sorry, just reading this post made me think about it. Great post btw!

I agree Siobhan, many unscrupulous firms do it, hopefully it comes back to haunt them. Wish you a great week, and much success.
