You may be tempted to leave important tasks on your site for next day. I’m not saying this to discourage you, but on the contrary to give you a realistic approach of what you are entering in. If you decide to give this a go, you’re competing with people that are doing this full time. So, you must work hard to start to see results.

A bit of history: I’m certainly no expert in this field but I have recently been called to attention to the importance of phalanx in warfare in Archaic and Classical periods in Greece. Phalanx was a military formation of heavy infantry armed with spears.

This formation used Hoplite soldiers, that were mostly free citizens, property-owning farmers and artisans. It would line up hoplites in ranks in close order. The hoplites would lock their shields together, and the first few ranks of soldiers would project their spears out over the first rank of shields. A phalanx therefore was a shield wall and a mass of spears pointing out to the opponent. This made frontal attacks against it very difficult.

Each single hoplite carried his shield on the left arm, protecting not only himself but the fighter to the left. This is an example of a military formation in which the individualistic elements of battle were suppressed for the good of the whole. The hoplites had to trust their neighbors to protect them, and be willing to protect their neighbors. A phalanx was therefore only as strong as its weakest elements.

A phalanx thus depended on how well the hoplites could preserve this formation while being in combat. Its effectiveness also relied on how well they could stand their ground.

For this reason, the formation was purposely organized to carefully group friends and family together. This also provided a psychological incentive to support one's fellows, and a disincentive through shame to panic or attempt to flee. The more disciplined and brave the army, the more likely it was to win.

I know a lot of discussion has gone along the years concerning the Greco-Persian Wars. But without entering into too many details, in its earliest phase, the Battle of Marathon took place.

The Persians made their first invasion of Greece. They sailed down the coast of Attica, and landed at the bay of Marathon. This bay is about 25 miles from Athens. The Athenians were outnumbered at least 2 to 1.

Notwithstanding this disadvantage, and contrary to their normal practice, the Greek army ran into battle for the first time. This was probably because it was also the first time that a Greek army had faced an enemy composed primarily of missile troops. This evidently took the Persians by surprise. Herodotus says "... in their minds they charged the Athenians with madness which must be fatal, seeing that they were few and yet were pressing forwards at a run, having neither cavalry nor archers".

The Story of Greece Told to Boys and Girls states “They crashed into the Persian army with tremendous force”. The phalanx formation proved successful!

Herodotus records that 6,400 Persian bodies were counted on the battlefield. And the Athenians only lost 192 men.

This was the first time the Greeks had beaten the Persians. And it proved that the Persians were not invincible (something very difficult to conceive at the time). This victory highlighted the superiority of the Greek hoplites, and showed their potential when used wisely.

This historical example is brought to the table, mainly to show two things:

a. The importance of training and organization: This prevails over improvisation. It’s my firm belief that if you’re well organized and trained, any other notorious disadvantages will fade in importance. Never underestimate what a good training can do for you! It will give you an edge over any competitor!

b. The community role: the support of the unselfish and thoughtful community here at Wealthy Affiliate is truly invaluable. Moving along with the community and building lasting connections has proven to bring good results to all those that consciously have taken this route.
