This will create an XML file in your downloads directory.
Move this file to your Backup directory and you are finished.

I see Craig just posted link to another tutorial too, there are several different ways to do backups, if you want to do a complete backup you can have it setup to automatically do this every day/week/month and have it sent to a free Dropbox account if you want. If you have exported the files into an XML file as the tutorial explains then you should be able to directly import this file into a new(or the same)Wordpress installation.
Just reverse the process using the Import function.
Keep in mind that this technique will ONLY backup your content. Pictures and other media will NOT be backed up. This includes the Theme and Plugins.
