Don't be afraid to mention things you don't like about a given product or service...
People will always appreciate your honesty!
The more realistic and honest you are with your recommendations, the more you will be trusted along with your credibility.
If what you are offering is really interesting, your visitors will be delighted to find out what is good and bad about the product or service.
There a few things to keep in my mind with your recommendations regarding how you can make things work to your advantage...
When you are recommending a certain product, there are some things to remember on how to make it work effectively and to your advantage.
Remember this...make it sound as if you are the expert in what you are talking about!
Price resistance diminishes in direct proportion to trust!
Your potential buyers will be more inclined to purchase from you if they think you're the expert!
However, if your recommendation doesn't read with confidence your buyer will quickly leave your site, off to find someone else they feel comfortable with!

How to establish an aura of expertise?
I'm assuming that you need to first purchase the product yourself, use it, and then write a product review, which I have done. When products get more expensive it becomes more challenging.
This can get a bit pricey, but I don't know how else it can be done, unless of course you are trusting others reviews--seems a bit dicey.
What is your experience around this question?

That's what I have done in the past...
If there's not much info around about the product or service I would give it a wide berth...
