Local Marketing/Business Planning

Hey, Folks! So this starting a business is a slow going task for me. Truth is, I have little time to dedicate to it. Yet, I believe there is potential to my project. Thus, I keep working at it little by little.

So as I am nearly at a crossroads, I ask my WA community a few questions!

First off, let me explain my project:

1) I want to do local marketing, directing people back to my affiliate site where they can then order any of the products that they desire.

I can do this (i.e. local marketing) and quite possibly earn some nice income while directing people to a very helpful and excellent product(s).

But my question lies here:

I have done no backlinking to this site. I've only built the site. Thus, the site isn't ranking. So I'm asking myself, do I spend the time solely doing local marketing, or do I put in the time, getting the site to rank and thus hopefully gaining some traffic sort of passively?

What do I do here?

My hesitancy regarding backlinking is that I feel like it will take forever to do, that it will take a couple months for my site to start ranking (months where I could be spending time trying to get the product out locally).

Thus, I guess my question to WA is:
1) Is there a quick, easy, yet effective way of backlinking?
2) What would you do if you were in my position?

Thanks, guys :)

I do both on my sites. I do the back linking and content over a long period of time and your site then becomes more interesting and google likes it.

I have a question for your question..

The site you have built, is it specifically targeted to a specific geographic location?

Jay, it is not targeted to a specific geographic location. Honestly, you are an excellent person to address the questions I have going on in my mind right now. You can see more of these questions in my response to Dave, which I'll include:

"There's really no need for me to me to do backlinks. However, I think why I'm now considering the possibility of it is because perhaps it could be some easy, steady traffic. But my issue more is, will the traffic really come easy, or will I have to work my butt off to do it, and will that work be worth it? I've tried the backlinks with one other site and it took work . . . and I'm not sure I'm up for that kind of work again, especially if I've misread/misunderstood the possibility of this keyword/niche."

Btw, for my first site, my keyword ended up being kind of a joke. It was an experiment. I learned from it. I'm not upset about it; that's how it goes! I just don't want to repeat my mistakes. Thus, I'm questioning, do I work on backlinks or not? Could this be a profitable niche or not (regarding traffic)? Do I have a good keyword or not? I think I do, but I'm quite inexperienced at this stuff. Thus, if I do, what process should I take to get ranked (in addition to doing local marketing)?

Jay, if you're interested in seeing my site and keyword, I'd be happy to pass it on to you. Your expertise advise would be enormously helpful here!

It's really two different issues. When you're talking to local biz directly, you're going to direct them to your site - you don't need backlinks for this.

Backlinks are only necessary to rank your site in the search engines. So if you want your pages to rank for specific keywords in google, then you should get backlinks to those pages with your keyword in the link text.

Hope this helps,

Dave

Dave,

Yeah, I agree completely. There's really no need for me to me to do backlinks. However, I think why I'm now considering the possibility of it is because perhaps it could be some easy, steady traffic. But my issue more is, will the traffic really come easy, or will I have to work my butt off to do it, and will that work be worth it? I've tried the backlinks with one other site and it took work . . . and I'm not sure I'm up for that kind of work again, especially if I've misread/misunderstood the possibility of this keyword/niche. I'm gonna respond to Jay here and see if he has any more input regarding my minor dilemma/questioning of direction I should take.
Dave, I really appreciate you taking the time to write me. With the hustle and bustle of everyday life, I really appreciate you reading my question and concern. Thanks so much! If I could give you a high five, I would.
