Backlinks and the answer was "Nope"
I have not long read the post by Karl on the value in back links....and I am glad that the answer was "nope"
https://my.wealthyaffiliate.com/kyle/blog/are-backlinks-good-for-rankings-nope
I did leave this question in the comment section for discussion but seeing that it has been a few days since anyone has commented there, I thought I might bring it to WA's attention in this forum.
My question is...if we have spent time on back links in a previous life, and using the once well-known ranking factors
1. the number of links pointing to your site,
2. the anchor text of those links and
3. the authority of those links.
and those links still exist with quite a few article directories.
There was a time when supposedly learned marketers proposed that the duplicate content issue was a myth and it was okay to share the same article around different directories. It was okay for people to use the same article as content on their site as long as they included your link with the article.
Would these older links still have a negative effect or incur a penalty on the SEO of our sites today and should we just pull them from those directories and use them as content on our sites?

Hey Stephan, Here is some excellent information from Pj Germain.
He knows his stuff.
If you don't have him in your network you might want to drop him a line and join him. Tell him I said Hey. Why Do I Need Backlinks? Tim
