Singapore: The Garden City
Hi everyone,
Recently, I shared some photos of my neighborhood. And there was interest to see more of Singapore. I was born in Singapore and have lived here for 60 years. Today, I would like to share a little more about the island state.
In 1967, the late Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew introduced the βGarden Cityβ vision. The vision has since been evolved into 'City in a Garden' and then to the current 'City in Nature'. It is a part of the larger environmental sustainability Singapore Green Plan 2030.
Here are some places I have visited around Singapore that reflects that theme.
Immediately, upon arriving at the Singapore Changi Airport, don't miss visiting Jewel. it features a lush garden with an indoor waterfall inside the airport. You can see many people taking photos and videos to share about this place on their social media.
This is the full length of the waterfall. Yes, it is very tall. At night, it lights up with a light show. If you can, do visit at night to see the enchanting light show.
As you enter the city, you will see lots of greenery and flowers everywhere. The ride from the airport to the city is lined with tall trees and shrubs that are always in bloom.
The above photo is a view of the Singapore River. It is within the Central Business District. You can see trees and pockets of bushes with flowers in bloom along this river.
While at the Singapore River, check out the art installations there. The above photo features one of the many interesting statues placed along the river.
If you are staying at a hotel, consider ParkRoyal Hotel. It is located in Chinatown area which is bustling with activities and delicious food. It has been voted Asia's Leading Green Hotel for 6 consecutive years.
And if you are like me, and wish to enjoy more nature, then visit the Singapore Botanic Gardens.
While there, try to spot as many art installations as possible. Some may not be easy to see as they are cleverly immersed into the scenery. There is also a beautiful orchid garden to see.
There are many more interesting places to visit in Singapore. I will share them later. For now, I hope you enjoyed these photos?
They do reflect the vision of a garden city that the late Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew envisioned, don't they?
Have a great weekend, everyone!
Tim

Beautiful photos Timo.
Its more than 20 years since I was in Singapore. I really should make the effort to go back on holiday this time.

Thanks, Dave. They were all taken by me. Before having to deal with cancer and the many medical appointments, I used to love taking photos when I get around Singapore.
In fact, there were a few times I took photos of the areas around the hospitals π Here is a video I took at the hospital - https://www.facebook.com/reel/1193839501217069?mibextid=kcDB8O
Good to know you were here 20 years ago, my friend. A lot has changed since. You will be pleasantly surprised. Hope you visit again.

Its on my list of things to do. Hope you are feeling better. When I get there, you can show me around in a leisurely fashion. Everything is so rushed when you are working out there. I was at the Epson facility.
Yes, life is very busy and everyone is always in a hurry in Singapore.
I am slowly getting better. Thanks π
It will be good to show you around. I just hope I am still well enough to do so. I will do my best.
Were you working in Epson?
Tim
From these pictures, I get the impression that it must rain often in Singapore, Tim. To maintain the gardens and greenery. Am I wrong about that?
Isaiah π
It doesn't Isaiah. Singapore is a tropical island. It is near the equator and it gets really hot most of the year.
There is the hot season and the wet season. From Nov/Dec to Feb/Mar, it is the rainy season. It gets wet and cold then.
The other 8 months are hot and hotter. Occasional rain now and then. SG has a government body (NParks) that takes care of the greenery. During the hot season, they have trucks of water going around the island watering all the trees and plants.
Tim
Beautiful city, I would love to visit it one day. Enjoy your weekend. Have a good one.

There are certainly many cities that are worse to live in than Singapore Tim!
I just don't know if I could cope with the year round humidity though!
That airport is something else from what I have seen, isn't it a huge tourist attraction for many who don't even go there to take a plane???
Take care buddy and enjoy a wonderful start to the new week! :-)
Thanks, Nick π
Yes, I am aware that there are worse cities to be in. And I am grateful for Singapore.
Yeah, even though I've lived here my whole life, the humidity annoys me too.
Changi Airport is an attraction. Even locals, like me, would visit often. Was there recently to attend an Apple training session at one of the largest Apple stores in SG. I don't own an iPhone but attended with my friend who does. After that, we went to a Korean restaurant to enjoy Korean food.
Have a great week, buddy! π
