Protecting Myself from Me

The disease of addiction has a ferocious appetite.

It survives on what we feed it. It draws much of its strength from our shortcomings and fears, but it’s the secrets we hold on to that nourish it the most.

And the more secrets we keep, the more it has to feed on, and the stronger it gets.

Our secrets provide so many other goodies for this disease to gorge itself on: dishonesty, shame, lack of trust, guilt, and isolation.

Whatever we cannot talk about gives this disease more fuel.

That is why there has to be at least one person with whom you share all your secrets.

So, with that said, what is it that you are not telling?

Are you secretly holding on to thoughts about visiting dangerous places, or the desire to use?

Does it have something to do with dirty money, or your sexual impulses? Or is it something else?

We need to starve this ravenous disease, and we do it by getting rigorously honest with ourselves and revealing the secrets we were planning to keep to ourselves.

Sharing your deepest secrets could involve many options.

Some of us have shared our stuff with our sponsors within the fellowships, being Narcotics Anonymous, Alcoholics Anonymous or another fellowship.

Another fellowship could be your Pastor at your church or the therapist you've been seeing...or the therapist you need to be seeing!

The point is this. We are only as sick as our secrets.

Have you decided that you are tired of being sick?

Have you decided that you are tired of being sick and tired?

I decided almost fourteen years ago that I was.

Prayer for the Day

I pray that we all learn to trust someone other than ourselves.

To trust him or her enough to expose all our secrets that are keeping us stuck and hostage.

To trust them enough with our secrets so we can protect ourselves from relapsing.

We ask God to Bless us with the humility we need to not allow ego, fear or shame to stop us from working a rigorously honest program.

AMEN!!!

Jeff

Thank you Jeffrey...apologize for the late reply...I have been caregiving for my father who is 91 years old

No worries, Timo! Keep doing the priority things! A late response is better than none, my friend!

Jeff

Looking inwardly at ourselves and taking responsibility is the first step to taking back our power. Thanks for the reminder.
Take care.
