Working with the Amazon Associate Program with a Startup Site
I have read lots of people's blogs here on WA, lamenting about how Amazon has cancelled their Associate Program agreement with them. Or blogs about worrying over having received a warning from Amazon that they will be soon cancelled, if no referrals/sales are generated from their sites within X amount of days/weeks/months hence.
I also received this warning, 60 days after joining and using the Amazon program to offer products on my niche site. My warning stated that if, after 90 days, my site had not generated any referral sales, my Associate agreement would be terminated. I would, they said, have to option of re-applying later, (I believe they said 6 months) after the termination date.
The notice went on to say that their Associates program is intended for sites with high traffic volumes, which will generate a substantial amount of daily product clicks and a steady flow of referral sales. "Please feel free, if you are terminated, to re-apply when your site meets these qualifications." (I am paraphrasing, but that was the gist of the content)
I freaked out!
WTF?! My site was only about 75 days old at the time, still being filled out with content, still in the getting SEO'd stages. I was getting maybe 5 or 6 unique visitors and a total of 9 or 10 visitors daily - that was all - and product clicks were few and far between, and the odds of a "steady flow of referral sales" happening within the next 30 days were about that of finding a mountain of snowballs in the depths of Dante's Inferno!
Here's what I did. I resorted to desperate measures.
Yes, I admit it.
I was not about to have 2 months of hard work go down the drain, have all my links (hundreds of them!) become useless on my site, and be left with the bleak prospect of having to find any other program - or probably a few dozen of them, combined - that could possibly even begin to fill the void left by the absence of the vast product offerings Amazon has that are perfect for my niche.
So I explained my situation to a good friend, got his permission, and went on his computer. I set up an Amazon customer account for him, then logged onto my niche site as a visitor, clicked on a product, and went to Amazon and ordered it for (and "as") him.
Sneaky, and certainly a little white lie sort of "cheating", I know, but ...
I make no apologies.
I needed TIME and resources to get to where my site would fit what Amazon (and I) wanted.
And it worked. I got a notification of "Congratulations" from Amazon 2 days later, saying that my Associates Agreement had qualified, and they looked forward to doing much more business with me for a very long time.
Now, about 4 months later, since the scare and desperate measures in order to survive, my site is doing very well, thank you very much. Daily visitors are averaging 100+ and growing, product clicks are in the double-digits and growing, and referral sales are starting to trickle in. I am sure, within a good year's time from now, my site will have thousands of visitors daily, and the sales will be a substantial and steady flow.
Amazon has no understanding of, or patience with, "startup" sites. They want results NOW. I think it's kind of odd they would even accept an agreement with a startup, given their requirements for continued association. But hey - it is what it is, and I am just sharing what worked for me.
Call me a cheater if you want, but in this case I definitely feel that "the end justified the means" because in the end it is a win-win for me and Amazon, hmm?

I wouldn't beat yourself up too much about the bogus buyer as I believe this is a worldwide tactic of how to get around this little problem? Amazon got their sale, they are happy, you got the breathing space to allow your site to grow. Win/Win! Thanks for sharing this personal story with us.
Cheers

I receive the the same warning. I figured that if they wanted to cancel me, well go ahead, Well, I did nothing and I haven't heard a word back and my account is still active.
I hope your luck continues - or better yet, your sales start pouring in and they have no reason to cancel you.
We'll see. I'll hold tight and keep my fingers crossed. Fortunately, I have other other affiliate programs that have the same type of products I'm promoting. They do pay better but their prices aren't quite as low. It is what it is!

I should have done what you did, all my products and affiliate links were from amazon,i had to re-write some product reviews and some content, there are some products you can only find in amazon so when i got the boot, the products had to be changed, not fun at all.
I have up to now not re-applied.
Oh, wow, that had to hurt! Well, best wishes this next time around, and hey - don't forget this little "ploy" if needed, okay?
Thank you for the heads up on this program. Great strategy!
I probably would have frozen and not thought this through.

This is my plan as well. I have already contacted a friend who said she would do this. However, she doesn't want one of the products that I have linked to. But from my understanding as long as the get to amazon via your link, they can buy whatever they want and you still get the credit.
My other issue is that I have both an amazon.com and amazon.ca account. I don't have any friends in the US so my friend that agreed to help will be using the .ca site.
Hopefully I will get a click on amazon.com by Oct (when my account will be closed)
Tanja, yes, anyone who goes to Amazon by way of a custom link on your site, is "tied" to your sales/referral program and tracked for the next 24 hours. Any purchases made by that person - no matter WHAT it is - will be credited to you. My very first "sale" was a pair of hiking boots - and all my links are food ingredients and kitchen cookwares, etc.! lol
Best of luck to you with Amazon!
Sorry to jump in here but I'm actually curious as to how the Amazon Associate program works for Canadians. If you sign up through the .ca site, will your links also be to the .ca site instead of .com?
I would sign up with Amazon.com because that is probably where most of your readers will be coming from. Unfortunately if people are shopping online outside of the US they will probably end up leaving and going to their country's amazon. But that is ok. As you get more traffic you can sign up with other amazon programs and then use a link converter link geni.us and their amazon link engine plugin.
Hope that helps
I think what you did was totally justifiable and that Amazon is throwing away profit by a silly practice. Good job.
The exact same thing happen to me! I got the same email from amazon at the end of June. But I don't have any friends willing to do what your friend for you. So Amazon haven't close my account yet but I'm sure that when I reach the 6 months mark. They will close my account.
As you said, Amazon you should give us more time espacially when you are a startup site with very little traffic. It take time to build traffic to your site and get good ranking in google!

Great job. I also have my parents backing me up. And girlfriend and friends etc.....Everyone is clicking daily on my websites and on the affiliate links. Well, so far I get good traffic from them. I also had your plan in mind if it won't work well. But you made it public and it's great for everyone out there who feel losing their hope.
Keep the faith. The devil is not so dark.
Cheers!
Thanks. I was a little worried about "coming out" like this, lol. But I know lots of people like us have to get a little creative during the "fake it until you make it" stages, right?

haha! Very clever, actually! I'm so glad I read this, because although I'm not to the point where I've joined Amazon's affiliate program, it is DEFINITELY on my list of to-do's here soon. It's nice to know that I should be on the lookout for this sort of thing when the time comes. Thanks so much for "outing" yourself! Very useful info!
you're welcome :-)
