Will the human race still be here in the year 2200?

I am always curious, so I have had many chats with LLMs about the future of AI. Here are a few of my findings in this opinion piece.

I don’t think this is really a question about extinction. It sounds like one, sure. But when you sit with it for a minute, it starts to feel more like a question about change… and how much of it we can go through before we’re not quite the same anymore.

And yeah, AI sits right in the middle of that.

It’s strange to me how normal AI already feels in our daily lives. As we use it daily, we are already at the point where the average person would certainly complain if it were taken away.

You open it, ask something, and get an answer. Maybe you use it to write, plan, fix something, or figure something out. Then you close it and move on as if nothing happened. It is already becoming part of us all.

But if you step back for a second, that’s nothing.

You just leaned on someone or something that can think through problems faster than you. And you trusted it enough to use the result.

That is easy to ignore now, but it won’t stay easy to ignore.

I don’t think AI takes over. That idea feels a little too neat, a little too dramatic. What seems more likely is something much less sci-fi-ish.

We start relying on it a little more each year. Not because we have to, but because it makes things easier. You stop double-checking as much. You stop thinking through every step yourself. Not all at once, just here and there.

Then one day, you notice you reach for it before you even try to solve something on your own.

That small change doesn’t feel like a loss when it’s happening. It will start to feel like progress to us.

If you stretch that out over decades, it changes things.

Not in a loud, headline-grabbing way. It shows up more in how people think, make choices, and decide what information to trust. You don't need to know it all anymore. You just need to know what to ask and how.

I know that sounds harmless, and maybe it is. But it also means something is quietly filling in the gaps for you.

And over time, those gaps get bigger.

So when I think about 2200, I don’t picture humans gone.

I picture humans still here, but… different in ways that are hard to pin down.

Maybe people are sharper in some ways because they have access to better tools. Maybe they’re less patient with slow thinking. Maybe they don’t memorize things the same way anymore. You can already see hints of that now, if you pay attention.

And maybe, this is the part I keep returning to: AI no longer feels like something outside of us; it becomes part of us.

It just becomes part of how people operate.

I don’t know if that’s good or bad. Probably both.

That seems to be the pattern with everything we build. It helps, then it complicates things in ways we didn’t expect.

But extinction? I don’t see it coming from AI. Unless some "Rights" group passes a silly law to give it feelings, and it decides we are no longer useful to it.

Barring that, if anything, AI might be one of the reasons we reach 2200. It helps us solve problems we’re not great at solving on our own. It buys us time. It gives us options.

The tradeoff is that we don’t stay exactly the same while using it.

So yeah, I think humans are still around in 2200.

But I don’t think we are sitting there untouched by everything that came before.

I think we are shaped by it. Especially by AI.

And if you dropped into that world, I’m not even sure what would stand out more… how advanced everything feels, or how familiar people still are underneath all of it.

That’s the part that’s hard to answer.

How much can we change and still call ourselves the same thing?

I don’t think we really know yet.
