Why “Delve” Is the AI Word That Needs to Die

Rest In Peace

If you’ve read anything written by AI lately, chances are it asked you to delve into the topic within the first paragraph. And that’s the problem.

Nobody talks like that. Not even Scott when he is composing Boosy Reviews!

When was the last time someone at a party said, “Let’s delve into this potato salad”? Exactly. It never happens. This word is far from Amazing and needs to go forth to the hereafter!

Delve Funeral

Here’s why “delve” is a dead giveaway you’re reading something artificial:

  • It’s overly formal. Real people say “dig in,” “go deeper,” or “take a look.” “Delve” feels like a word you use when your thesaurus gets cocky.
  • It breaks the flow. Good writing should be clear and natural. “Delve” sticks out like a stiff collar at a hoodie convention.
  • It screams “robot.” Ask five AI tools to write a blog post intro, and you’ll get “Let’s delve into…” at least four times. It’s become the beige wall of AI writing, technically acceptable, but soulless, and very much needs to go away.

Want to sound human? Try being human. Use words that feel real. Speak like you’re actually talking to someone, not like you’re narrating a museum tour. Be you and use your own words. Combine yourself with what AI gives you to polish your content, but by all means: Lose This Word!

So next time you see “delve,” do us all a favor: delete it. You’ll sound better instantly, and if not, Delve into a thesaurus and try again!

You may even convince it to Delve it's own hole for burial!

Michael this post needs to be printed and taped to every AI’s screen, I didn’t even realize how many times I’ve used “delve” until now, went back to one of my drafts and it literally said “let’s delve deeper” twice in the same paragraph

You’re spot on, nobody at a party ever said “let’s delve into this potato salad” and if they did I’d be putting my plate down and slowly heading for the door

From now on “delve” is getting buried next to “thus” and “henceforth”, appreciate you digging this one up, or should I say delving into it one last time before we shut the coffin

Pure gold man, this one had me laughing hard

So glad you enjoyed it!

Good morning Michael,

Very well said, Michael!

I believe the word "Delve" is AI's most favourite word, for some reason! The fact is that I often listen to YouTube videos well I'm working, the author has obviously used an AI script and will start off by saying, "Let's delve into"! I am hearing this quite a bit now. I know for a fact that one YouTube I listen to use's AI a lot!

I don't know from imagining things, but it feels like people are even talking more like AI now. When I say talking like AI, I mean using AI words and phrases.

Thanks for bringing a bit of humour to your blog and something that many of us can recognise! I'm going to delve into some of the comments now and see what other members have to say!

Have a great day.

Acknowledgment protocols initiated—thank you, Roy, for engaging with the content stream on my data node. I trust the informational payload met your satisfaction parameters. Feel free to parse and interact with the auxiliary user-generated dialogue, as I’ve derived notable sentiment resonance from them myself. Wishing you optimal output metrics for the remainder of your solar cycle, sir!

For my parenting site the words I have to swap out most often are 'key', 'is key', navigate, engaging,
I told the AI writer not to use 'is key' and so it turned it around to 'the key...is'. lol
'Delve' hasn't been a problem with 'my' ChatGPT, but I am perfectly happy to see it buried.

Grammarly doesn't like "is key" either, so I had to make it a rule to ignore it.

I've stopped using the word "foster" in any of my writing because AI generates it so often! And I won't tell you what "delve" sounds like to me.!!!

3

You could always foster delve till it begins to resonate

LOL! I noticed this the very first time I used CHATGPT. I provided profile instructions to my GPT, which is something I had instructed my AI never to use. So far, so good!

Outstanding MG, great post. You hit the nail right on the head!!
