YouTube Partner Program

YouTube just announced a significant change in the YouTube (YPP) Partner Program eligibility requirement. It is now a bit harder to satisfy the minimum requirement to be eligible for monetization of your YouTube Videos.

Five days ago we saw Mark Zuckerberg announcing the beginning of a new Facebook News Feed Algorithm Change aimed at improving interaction between FB users and improving quality of the news feed (fewer business/marketing based spammy passive posts) - See my Blog Post about Facebook Change I wrote five days ago -

Before this latest change, to be eligible to show ads on your YouTube Videos you had to have at least 10,000 lifetime overall channel views . The new requirements are :

  • 4,000 hours of watchtime within the past 12 months
  • 1,000 subscribers

Note: come February 20th, 2018, this new threshold will be applied to existing channels and if your channel has fewer than 1,000 subs or 4,000 watch hours you will no longer be able to earn money on YouTube. You can apply again to activate monetization when you reach the new threshold in the future.

YouTube is implementing these changes to fight against 'bad actors' and to protect inspiring and original video content creators. - Remember CONTENT is the King!

With this tougher barrier to entry they are hoping to make life harder for spammers and impersonators while improving protection for dedicated content creators and possibly drive more ad revenue to them.

While it is true that if you do not yet meet the new requirements it means your YouTube Ad Revenue would be very small, there will be many new small content creators that will lose small amounts of income which could have helped with paying for purchase of domain names, web hosting, etc... (assuming they had their own website and not just a YouTube Channel)

This is yet another signal reinforcing the idea that you must own your own business, your own web property which has to be separate from social media platforms. Social media platforms are traffic channels for you, remember YouTube owns YouTube and can switch off your channel or change policies any time. Same as Facebook owns Facebook and can deactivate your ad-manager for your FB Account or ban you from FB all together.

Do not base all of your traffic on a single social media channel, keep your options open with multiple streams of traffic.

Above all, stick to tried and tested ethical marketing.
Internet Marketing, Affiliate Marketing, SEO, Social Media Marketing and more 'as taught here at Wealthy Affiliate' is effective and safe! It's the backbone for your real, stable, and repeatable successful online business.

Let the spammers be spammers, let the rogue marketers constantly have to reinvent their process because their latest loop-hole technique, gaming the system strategy, etc... is being punished by Google, Facebook, YouTube, Instagram... so they have to look for, buy, the latest con system.

In the meanwhile, you keep building a real, your real, online business which will only get more and more traction month after month, year after year... by doing it the right way! The Wealthy Affiliate way!

I will use YouTube to drive traffic.

Yes, no problems there

Woah.. that is some bad stuff. But yeah you are right, we should not base our income on just external sites, rather on our website and property that we own.

One can still create video's, but should drive traffic to their own property instead.

It means my old own gaming channel which had promotional rights, will soon be degraded to a standard account. Pretty annoying.

You are right. Nothing is lasting like what you have built. Depending on Social media is not the best and they have a right to protecting their image.
