About TaraEJH
Joined July 2016
Hi everyone. My name is Tara, I live in Ireland and I am a writer by trade and by nature. I am also a single parent, of three smashing children, and I want to provide for them in every way I can and still be physically around for them as much as possible. Working online appears to me to be the answer. I have chosen the image of the puppy for a few reasons: my profile picture is about 10 years old and I am currently working on setting up a new one. I am passionate about animals and breed puppies for The Guide Dog Association of Ireland. Labrador pups such as these are a joyful addition to my life. And lastly - who doesn't like puppies?! I am really looking forward to meeting you all. Warmest wishes

Great to see that you've added some goals Tara!

Working towards achieving these goals will happen as you take action on the lesson tasks here at WA. Ask questions when you have them, and take your time. This is not a race, and your time investment will have you up and running before you know it!

Robert, I am so happy to meet you. Not least because you have finally solved this problem that was holding me back - how to add banners and product image links. I have finally done it! Where I was going wrong was that I was in visual rather than text. Either that, or I wasn't in edit mode and I didn't realize. In any case, I am extremely grateful. You have made a big difference to me and my site.
I laughed when I saw the phrase in your message "steep learning curve", as I had been thinking those very same words just that day. Anyway, I am determined to learn!
I have read one of your blogs already and found it to be jam packed with useful information. Thanks again! I will be reading more and let's hope, applying it too.
My mother is a Cranston and her people are from the Edinburgh region of Scotland. My grandfather and great-grandfather were both called Robert Cranston and about half my male relatives are called Robert. So it seems fitting that I am getting this great help from a Robert in Edinburgh. It is a very special city for me and I have spent a lot of time there.
So I am off to write a post about gratitude - believe it or not!
Lovely to meet you and I look forward to connecting with you again.
Warmest wishes

Hi there. What colour is your lab? Mine is black. I also have a golden retriever. I know what you mean about hardly leaving them on their own. They are, of course, not the only reason I want to work from home, but they are on the list!
Your pup is gorgeous. Burmese mountain dog?
Tara
Reply
Corse Premium
Yes, she is absolutely lovely, a bernese mountain dog. On that picture she was about 3 months old. Meanwhile she is much bigger, but the whole day she likes to get petted. My labrador is a white one and I've a got a mongrel with shepherd and terrier blood, the oldest of the three. I've got her from an animal shelter so I don't much about her. She should be now about 9 years old.
Have a good start into the new week,

Hi Tara good to hear you are on Course 2 lesson 9. I'm on lesson 2. Good training but a bit challenging which is good.
Are guide dogs usually Labs? It seems like they are mostly brownish. But I really like how Schnauzers look. They look like real classy gentlemen.
Reply
TaraEJH Premium
Yes, I feel like the class dunce a lot of the time - like everyone is surely getting things a lot quicker than I am! The main breeds they use for guide dogs are labs, golden retrievers and German Shepherds. Labradoodles and Goldendoodles getting very popular too. Not sure about Schnauzers!

I hope things are going well. I know you are getting rolling within the training and there is ONE thing that always tends to confuse people and that is "what is my niche?".

I know, same thing happened to me when I started.

I just wanted to reach out and let you know that I am here if you ever want to run any niche "ideas" by me or you have any questions about finding your niche.

Get back to me when you get the chance! :)

Hello Kyle. Lovely to hear from you. I can't tell you how delighted I am to have found WA. I am blown away by what you and Carson are offering here.

My two main passions in life are - and always have been - writing and animals. I am a professional writer and have had five novels published so far. I also teach creative writing classes and adore teaching groups. I have had the idea for a while, and was working towards setting up my own blog, with the hope of using it as a platform for publicizing my own books. I also had the idea of setting up online creative writing courses and devising e-books in relation to this area.

However!! This last week I have discovered affiliate marketing. After some research I have read that dogs are a good niche area. So I was thinking of starting out with the niche of dog appreciation/humor. I am a genuine dog lover and I think writing funny articles about dogs would come very easily to me. As well as focusing on other areas I find fascinating such as dog therapy and canine psychology.

What do you think? Is it better to stick with my original idea, focusing on writing? Or are dogs a good place to start? And would dog appreciation/humor be considered a valid and/or specific enough niche?

I would greatly value your input.

Sorry for being so long winded!

Kindest regards

Tara
Reply
Kyle Premium
I would head in the dog therapy or psychology direction versus humor. Humor could be an aspect of your website, but I wouldn't make that your theme necessarily. If you can write, which you most definitely are a natural at, you could literally head in any direction you want with your niche.

When deciding on a niche and trying to narrow down to a more specific niche, I recommend you ask yourself the following question:

I want to help people that ______________.

Fill in the blank and you are going to be much closer to a specific audience. After you do this and if you want to run any further ideas by me, let me know and I will give you a hand. :)
Reply
TaraEJH Premium
Hi again Kyle. I have been giving this some thought. When I filled in the blank, I kept coming up with the phrase "I want to help people that are depressed".
I am not sure what that means exactly! But it does make me want to set up a site that is uplifting in tone. I was thinking about dog therapy in its most general sense. For instance - "Have you been rescued by a rescue dog - share your story" - that kind of thing. As well as more serious and informative articles on dog therapy and how it works.

What do you think?

Thanks again.

Dealing With Depression?

That could definitely be your niche and if it is something that you are passionate about, definitely head in that direction.
Reply
TaraEJH Premium
Thanks a million Kyle. Just to clarify - do you mean dealing with depression in general? Or do you mean dogs helping people deal with depression?

Tara
Reply
Kyle Premium
You could narrow it down to dogs or even animals for depression. I do think you will have more flexibility and room to scale your business though if you make your domain something a bit more brandable and generic versus targeted a dogs for depression. Totally up to you here though Tara, I do like the direction you are heading and your creative thinking here.

Hello again Kyle
I am working away on the lessons - midway through lesson 8, course 1 - and really enjoying it.

However, I do have a niggling worry at the back of my mind.

We recently discussed the idea of me taking 'dealing with depression' as my niche and I have been happily running with this. But I do find myself wondering what products would tie in to a depression website when it comes to affiliate marketing. Just to be clear, I have no clue about affiliate marketing. But I was hoping you could shed some light on this ...

Also, having looked through depression on google, it does seem that most of these websites are medical in nature or set up by mental health charities etc.

What I had in mind was a site with a comforting feel to it - warm, vivid colors, beautiful natural images and a chatty, friendly tone to the writing. I don't want it to look or sound medical or text-bookish. And I definitely don't want to hold myself out as a medical expert or therapist, when I am not.

What do you think? Am I worrying unnecessarily?

Many thanks

Tara
