I selected a new theme and activated it, but when I log in, it doesn't show up..
A theme change won't be visible from your wordpress admin login. You'll need to view the site as a visitor would see it entering your site's URL in a browser's address bar.
You can do this from the admin login by going to the upper left corner of the wordpress dashboard and positioning your mouse over your site's name. You'd then click on the "Visit Site" entry that appears.

BobBarr is right on this one. The inside of your website (admin area) will always look the same. The theme changes the outside, what visitors see.
