The 10 Best Methods to Protect Yourself Online
This is my first post on this platform, I hope you find it interesting.
I would imagine you already know that in our increasingly digital age, personal online security has never been more crucial. From data breaches to identity theft, the dangers are real, but the good news is that there are simple steps you can take to protect yourself. Here's a rundown of the top 10 methods to ensure you stay safe online:
1. Use Strong, Unique Passwords Avoid using easily guessable passwords like "123456" or "password". Instead, opt for a combination of letters, numbers, and symbols. Consider using a passphrase—a sequence of words or an abbreviation of a memorable sentence. Don't reuse passwords across multiple sites. I personally use a password generator called Roboform but there are others.
2. Enable Two-Factor Authentication (2FA) 2FA adds an additional layer of security. Even if someone knows your password, they'll need a second piece of information, often a code sent to your phone, before accessing your account. We know that this can be frustrating but it's really well worth knowing who is actually logging into your accounts. It gives you back your control!
3. Keep Software Updated Regularly update your operating system, apps, and antivirus software. These updates often contain patches for security vulnerabilities that have been discovered since the last version. This seems a strange one but do you really want unwanted code placed where you can't really spot it. My guess is that you don't!
4. Be Cautious with Emails Phishing emails are a common method used by cybercriminals. Always double-check the sender's address, avoid clicking on suspicious links, and never download unknown attachments. I want to go into this more deeply in another post. Watch out for it!
5. Use a VPN A Virtual Private Network (VPN) encrypts your internet connection, ensuring your online activities remain private and shielding your data from potential eavesdroppers. People are often scare of VPN's, thinking that they're illegal. The legality of them totally depends on the activity. We all know you only want to protect yourself, I'm right aren't I?
6. Safeguard Personal Information Think twice before sharing personal details online, especially on social media. The more information you post, the easier it might be for someone to use that information to steal your identity.
7. Shop on Secure Sites When shopping online, ensure the website starts with "https://" (the 's' stands for secure) and look for a padlock symbol in the URL bar. These indicate the site uses encryption to protect your data.
8. Use a Firewall and Antivirus Software While a firewall shields your device from unauthorized access, antivirus software scans and removes malicious software. Use both for a multi-layered defense.
9. Regularly Monitor Your Accounts Keep an eye on your bank and other financial accounts for any suspicious activity. The sooner you spot something amiss, the quicker you can act.
10. Educate Yourself Cyber threats evolve, so stay informed. Regularly seek out reputable sources of information on online security to stay one step ahead of cybercriminals.
Watch out for more blog posts on security for you and your business. i intend to go in depth over the next few weeks.

Awesome first post Sue and so timely. I have been scammed online so many times. I finally found an anti-virus that worked so much better than anything I used previously and that helped but only three weeks ago I got my VISA bill and, lo and behold, I found that the card had been compromised...i think, as you have suggested, that a VPN is a great tool to have in the kit...perhaps indispensable (I hadn't installed it before my CC got compromised...great advice and I'll look forward to seeing more great content from you as we move forward...
I can help you to get your cards being monitored constantly for cloning if that's of interest.
I feel for you, I've had it done to me. That is why about a year ago I started studying everything about online security and how we can protect ourselves. I'm on a mission to help as many people as I can.🙃
Only this morning I received a message from a client saying she had received a message from Facebook stating her page was being taken down unless she gave them all of her details.
Thankfully I was able to assure her it was a scam. Here comes my next post lol
I really hope this was the end of your problems but please feel free to chat anytime
Thank you for your reply Sue and your generous offer...I have a VPN installed now and I'm hoping that keeps my stuff safe now. I know you are going to be an extremely valuable member of this community and thank you for your mission. Looking forward to the continuing dialogue here on WA. Have a wonderful Sunday!
