What is BELIEF?

Wikipedia defines BELIEF as “To believe something, is to take it to be true”

Oxford Dictionary says that BELIEF “is a strong feeling that something/somebody exists or is true; It is “a confidence that something/somebody is good or right”.

Let me put it in layman terms - “It is a thought or opinion about anything living or nonliving, believed to be true beyond any doubt.” This thought could be a fact or conviction or even basic assumption.

Where does the Belief come from?

Belief formation is a continuous thought forming and validation process within us. This can be positive and or negative. The trigger for beliefs can mostly occur consciously and or unconsciously; intentionally and or unintentionally as well; on our own as well as through others. Others include our daily life interactions or circumstances with family - which are siblings, parents, spouse, partner; friends, teachers, work colleagues, society, media, etc and the list goes on.

The medium of our thoughts would be through our memories whose ability to recall one or combination of our life experiences via various senses - visual (eyes), audio (hearing), kinesthetic (emotions), olfactory (odour) and gustatory (taste).

For example: In my 9th grade at school, I was bullied (visual, auditory & kinesthetic) by my then math teacher and peer students due to my ethnicity.

What does Belief do to you?

Once a thought is triggered due to conscious and or unconscious cue, your mind starts going round and round and this results in a Feeling of Emotion. The Feeling triggers a sensory change in the nervous system resulting in behaviour change.

Once there is a change in your behaviour, now you are led to take an action(s). It is obvious, there is no action without consequences or otherwise called result(s). Results can be immediate or delayed over a period of time, but there will be consequences.

Now comes the dangerous part. You as an individual are going to judge and form your own perspectives based on the results that you experienced. Your perspective could be empowering or disempowering. Regardless of the type, now you are moving into the cycle of repetition.

The beliefs can be of two types; the ones that empower you and the other one that disempower you.

Disempowering beliefs. These are beliefs that make you less powerful or confident. These serve against you, in a way take your power away from you.

For Example:

  • I am always late;
  • I am bad at English;
  • I can never run a mile and
  • I am always in debt.

Empowering beliefs. These are beliefs that help you to make you stronger and more confident in controlling your life situations and outcomes. They serve you in a positive way.

For Example:

  • I am late and I can and I will work towards being punctual,
  • I can improve my financials over a period with discipline and I am follow the steps to achieve it. I have done it in the past. I can do it now.

Newton's first law of motion states that

“Every object will remain at rest or in uniform motion in a straight line unless compelled to change its state by the action of an external force”

If I paraphrase this to our situation it would read - “You take control of choice of thoughts to repeat, otherwise, you will be on auto-gear without control”.

The mind does not distinguish between True and False. This serves in both directions. If you choose your best choice of thoughts to repeat, then it will be in your direction of outcome or else it will be in the opposite direction.

Supporting Table Legs

Our minds are like a database information system, or a google search for simplicity purpose. BELIEFs are like a table top. To install a Table we need a table top with supporting legs. The supporting legs are available from our past experiences, memories. Our minds are ready to serve us with positive or negative references/experiences by retrieving from our minds. Your BELIEF will be installed with sufficient supporting legs. Look at the below two examples.

So it is critical the choice of BELIEF we support with sufficient number of legs to make it a CORE belief . The more supporting legs, the stronger the CORE BELIEF and vice versa.

How do I change my BELIEFs?

To choose our new beliefs, we cautiously choose our thoughts, that would lead to beliefs, leading to actions and results. This means, choosing more supporting legs from our past experiences. If we don’t have enough supporting legs, we need to start building those supporting legs by working on one leg at a time, working on tasks that would transform into a supporting leg.

The results will also bring in new circumstances. Have a look below, hope you are able to visualise better now.

The common theme across all phases, is that directly or indirectly, you need to take action.

Take ACTION consciously - choosing your thoughts/Beliefs.

Take ACTION how you feel

Take ACTION, act on the steps towards your results

Experience the Results and loop back to working on the next steps.

This is a never ending loop.

Take Action.

Leap to your Greatness

Embrace the Struggle.

To your success.
